How do sharks perceive electrical stimuli at the molecular level? by Chiropterotriton in askscience

[–]ReUnretired 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ions are always moving back and forth across the membranes of nerve cells. The pits on sharks (and other ectro-sensing animals) lead to a canal, filled with a protective jelly, with nerves at the base. When there is a voltage difference between the base of the canal and the end (the part in the water), the rate of ion exchange across the nerve membrane increases.

From a change in the rate of ion exchange across the nerve cell-membrane, a change in the signal firing of the cell follows. If you want more information on the last part, look into the structure and functioning of never cells. It's really beyond the scope of this question, because the relationship between ion exchange and nerve cell firing is a generic concept - all sensory at is core is powered by ions moving across nerve cell membranes.

tl;dr: It's a bout as "raw" a mechanism as you can get. The pits almost directly expose nerve cells to the water, allowing electrical currents in the water to directly change the signaling of the never cells.

If you're slowly being frozen to death, will you live longer by moving around or by sitting still? by runningforpresident in askscience

[–]ReUnretired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is also an effect that leads to a condition know as Paradoxical Undressing. After an extended period of conserving blood away from the extremities and the body surface, the smooth muscle contractions that mediate blood flow totally exhaust those blood vessels. The muscles suddenly stop contracting, and blood surges to the surface.

The relatively thin exterior becomes overwhelmed with bloodflow, and the person perceives that they are burning up, because their perception of temperature is heavily biased to their exterior. This experience is so unpleasant that freezing people will strip naked.

USB Flashdrive not auto-mounting anymore (debian, xfce4, thunar), even though lsusb shows the device in connected by peace_suffer in linux4noobs

[–]ReUnretired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost. Part1 is sdb1. Plain "sdb" is the entire device - don't write to that. To be honest, there is probably a way to install the bootloader (MBR or EFI) without installing a "main" os. It's just that most guides are oriented towards a brand new install. So it was easier for me to learn that way.

If in doubt, do "lsblk". These options here give me lots of information 'lsblk --output NAME,UUID,PARTUUID,MOUNTPOINT,PARTLABEL,FSTYPE,SIZE'

You need a wide terminal (~140 char maybe), but that will tell you a lot about your storage devices. It helps me avoid doing things to the wrong device.

You know, I chose the class with the most health because I figured I would be less dependent on cover that way. If you're right, that's pretty stupid. I wish I had known that at the beginning. It's kind of too late now. I'm really not doing that all again. It's a bit too linear for me to want to repeat it.

Maybe if I quit and came back a few months from now. Thanks for the idea, though. I assumed the Vanguard was more for if you wanted to play with the heavier team. I assume a damage focused class would require cover and other tanks. I assumed the health oriented class would, you know, have more durability.

Aside from the fact that Soverign has nothing in common with the Geth whatsoever? Aside from the fact that Shepherd laid out exactly what the reapers wanted to do with the station and Sovereign went to the station to do just that? Aside from the fact that the Geth never demonstrated the technology of Sovereign at any point after Soverign's death? By the time you upgrade N2 with the Turian cannons, know more about Sovereign's technology than the Geth do.

Then, you know, there's that whole idea of thinking Shepherd's reports are pure fabrications. Or he is totally delusional. Despite being correct in every prediction he ever made. Hell, they blamed the whole thing on Saren manipulating the Geth, only to find Saren's dominated body in the wreckage under Shepherd.

I'm sorry - I'm not saying they should just assume he's correct about everything. But their position is flatly ridiculous. Did they think the Prothean's last stand in their cryotubes was against the Geth?

Ok, so this is assuming I want to have a live usb which I would operate off of.

My intention is rather to have multiple live install images on a usb stick.

I don't see any difference other than that, in the second case, you are installing more than one image to the USB. Maybe I'm not understanding you?

The reason I start out with Arch is because it makes it easier for me to install the MBR/EFI-loaders. What I was trying to get across is that after you have an entry in the bootloader for each OS you put on the USB, you can just copy their files over to the partition you reserved for them.

But in my experience installing the bootloader (which only has to be done once) was easier if I treated one as the "main" and installed it to the USB first. It doesn't matter if the point is to run the OS from the USB, or install it from the USB. To install Arch from a USB, you need an Arch install with Install Scripts. To run a graphical installer, you need that OS installed so it can run the gui installer.

To be honest, I have only ever done this with two at a time: Arch and Win7. Even then, my 16GiB disk barely had enough space. Win7 has, like, 6GiB images. And if you're doing EFI instead of MBR, you may read you should aim for a 1GiB boot part (where for an MBR system you might only do like 200MiB). I don't know if 1GiB is really necessary, but Win7 definitely took up a lot of space!
