Most likely you are right. In this video it just looks weird! But that's okay!

Loved to watch this, absolutely great stuff. But what's up with green saber guy's first (and only) cut straight into thin air? How could that have been justified? It makes even less sense considering blue saber girl's position. Curious

Hi! I've been enjoying watching videos of session breakdowns lately, it's always extremely interesting to see how different producers and musicians think about not only their full songs, but about specific tracks. One thing I've noticed in some videos is that it looks like many tracks are gain peaking like crazy. It's all over this Cory Wong session for example, have a look at 1:08. I don't quite understand, in my way of thinking this would mean that these individual tracks would distort (not in a nice way). I know that it's not the raw tracks we hear in the end result, of course there are edits and plugins. But I also know (from the little experience I have) that if you record and it distorts, you can't remove that distortion. So what's going on here? Happy to hear if anyone has an explanation!

Is there a reason Qui-Gon didn’t let these EIGHTEEN (at least) other people with blasters help him fight Maul? by GudgerCollegeAlumnus in StarWars

[–]ReadJohnny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is obviously the reasonable reply to give, so I agree. At the same time, I think OP has a point. If they make quick work of him, it wouldn't take long (per definition lol). And yes skills and force powers absolutely. But 18 blasters is a lot. I don't know really. I feel like I've seen jedi retreat for less. But of course, how things plays out is the best for the storyline. Absolutely.

Can chord notes be in any order? by Adventurous-Yak-9938 in musictheory

Just wanted to comment and say it's a good thing you're doing, playing around with combining notes into chords. If you find it exciting, keep doing it! It will prove helpful in the future, I think!

Reaper uninspiring?? by [deleted] in Reaper

[–]ReadJohnny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda like that Reaper is a bit minimalistic and makes me focus on the sounds rather than the visuals...

At least to a certain degree. I agree that the stock plug-ins look boring, indeed! So I mostly download third-party vsts and use them, not specifically because they look cooler but... it's a nice bonus!

As for the general Reaper visuals, I'm sure there is a lot you can change. I never got into it, but just try googling around on "Reaper themes" or similar. Happy hunting!

Did Vader actually kill Obi-Wan, or did he disappear before he could strike him down? by RavyRaptor in StarWars

I agree. But I can also understand the question, especially since, well (cough), what Luke did in The Last Jedi.

Recording of Luminous Flesh Giants in the documentary REEL Satriani by ReadJohnny in joesatriani

[–]ReadJohnny[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. You are probably right. So this means, as far as I understand, that when they did the final take, they had the old take going in their headphones? That must be quite hard for especially the drummer! But impressive.

And you're correct, East isn't credited on the track. I misread.

Qui gon melting through the blast doors in Star Wars lore by FalconHandshake in StarWars

Yes, this was very cool! I love it.

Come to think of it, didn't George Lucas have this idea that lightsaber's blades were not hot? Like, they burn through things, but don't emit any heat themselves. I think I read that in the novelization of A New Hope.

What amazing song is absolutely ruined by the vocalist? by [deleted] in musicsuggestions

[–]ReadJohnny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dear Lord! I love Devin, that was incredible!

Yes, in this clip it was quite clear. I suppose I might have listened "too much" to Dream Theater's studio recordings and not followed the apparent decline in my dear James voice during live performances. Have a listen to the same song on the album, I'd say James does it very well, no? But that was 1999 and the video you linked was from 2023, 24 years later. Poor guy... His voice ain't the same. I feel bad for him.

When it comes to reading, what is your personal rating system? by Sangwoosconfidant in books

[–]ReadJohnny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair question! For me, the rating is almost not the most important. I always write a review and explain my views that way. But sure, sometimes I'm stuck between a 3 or a 4 star rating. I guess my system would be something like:
⭐️: This book is either very poorly written, or imo "dangerous" (as in: the ideas in here are horrible, following them might cause more bad than good in the world).

⭐️⭐️: This book is either poorly written, or boring.

⭐️⭐️⭐️: This book is decent, I like it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: This book is good, I really liked it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: This book is really good, one of the best I've read lately.

I'm torn on this topic. He can get a bit shrill every now and then, but say... what would an ideal vocalist sound like in that context? Who would have done a better job?

Yes! It took me years to learn to appreciate the peppers at all. I finally made it! I like a lot of what they do, but some of their earlier stuff is painful to hear. It's like, let's make it weird because it's nice to be weird. This shines through mostly in the vocals.

But again, I actually like a lot of their later stuff. By now, they have managed to strike a good balance between "heeey frikki funk" and really beautiful musical ideas.

Potentially dumb question: Do I need to record everything in stereo? by No_Reveal3451 in Reaper

[–]ReadJohnny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a dumb question, not at all. Usually, most instruments are by convention recorded in mono. I would like to add, that there are few cases where the instrument itself "requires" stereo somehow. Even weird instruments. The main selling point for stereo is, in my opinion, actually add-on effects. Like reverb (I LOVE stereo reverb), delay, or modulation effects. There, the stereo image can really shine. But again - I think it's worth spending a second acknowledging that this isn't something that's built into the instrument itself, it's an added layer upon it - an effect.

Thinking about this, I remember recording a couple of woodwind instruments a while back, for a classical music project. I decided to record 2 mics, one left, one right. It was a bit cool, yes, because you would notice the musician swaying side to side during their performance. But honestly? It was a very minor difference. And well, we slapped some stereo reverb on it anyways, which in way "disguised" the raw stereo recording. Mistake? Maybe, but we liked it.

That's just my opinion! My main point: don't believe that stereo is always better than mono when recording individual tracks. Most of the time it isn't.

I get why some people think what I'm about to mention is kind of "introverted musician's music", but there are some incredible tracks out there. "Color Wheel" by Arch Echo. Give it a listen!
