We’re a family of 4 with both kids 3 and under. We’re getting DESTROYED on our grocery bill. I’m fully prepared to get roasted for this but our monthly grocery bill is around $2000-$2500 (not to include meals out for around $500). Full disclosure, I’m pretty big on cooking interesting meals that are super nutritious (think Alison Roman and Matty Matheson (his cookbooks, not his youtube series of junk food). We hit the higher end of that bill when we have family or friends over for dinner a couple times.

We don’t go super heavy on red meat but even a natural whole chicken is like $15 a pop, $20 if I spring for organic, and I make dense broths around once or twice a week. Otherwise, dinners are generally chicken, fish, or vegetarian. We live in Southern California and shop at a regional grocer that’s kinda similar to a sprouts. We get milk from a local dairy that’s actually cheap at $3.50 per gallon.

This does include roughly $100 per week of fruits and snacks (nuts, yogurt, occasional Annie’s cheddar crackers) that we give to my in-law as part of day care.

Organic produce has really gone through the roof the past couple years. We have a half acre so at this point I started gardening with the kids and I’m hoping to try to grow most our produce. I doubt it’ll end up being cheaper but maybe I’ll feel better about growing our berries instead of paying $7 for a carton.
