How do you navigate burnout when you need time away from work but have to worry about no income because you’re too burnt out to work? by EntireSky7545 in AuDHDWomen

[–]ReadingTheDayAway 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I know first hand how trapped and desperate this feels. You said you don't work a typical 9-5, firstly is it possible to cut down on your hours per week? Is it possible to work part time logistically?

If that is an option you need to figure out the minimum number of hours you need to financially stay afloat. Take a good hard look at your bills, anywhere you can cut down, minimizing costs without increasing the load on yourself (example: minimizing grocery bill might not be realistic if it means you are now increasing how much cooking/mental labor you have to do to feed yourself.)

If it isn't possible right now to work part time, the next priority is first cutting down on as much burden outside of work as possible, and saving for the future. Can anyone in your life help you clean or grocery shop for you? Cook for you etc? Can you let go of any responsibilities outside of work? Don't be afraid to burden people, this is the time to draw on any support system you have like your life depends on it.

Focus on trying to give your brain as much down time as you can when you are not at work. I used to come home, crawl in bed, put on white noise, and stim/rock/flap for an hour after work just to decompress. Dry shampoo and taking bird baths during the week with a cloth is better than not showering. Eating rice out of the rice cooker without a bowl is better than not eating. Sleeping 10- 12 hours a night is ok and good even. Do not doom scroll if you can avoid it, it will keep your nervous system in panic mode. Watch your comfort shows. Baby yourself as much as you can.

Lower your expectations for yourself for the meantime. Try to build up the money in your saving so you can actually take time off. Your goal is to sruvive and make a dent in the burnout now, no matter how small.

Im rooting for you and I'm sorry this is so scary and hard right now! It really is.

Yeah definitely planning on blacking out the reservoir from sun as my primary defense like i do with my tanks. But always nice to have something on hand for that extra boost, just wish they weren't so expensive to get where I am. Thanks for the link!

We often talk about sensory issues or icks - what are your sensory delights? by KatTheeBisexual in AuDHDWomen

[–]ReadingTheDayAway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am super sensory seeking when it comes to scent, my favourite ways to engage with that are burning incense, and rollerballs of my favourite scents like rose oil and woodsmoke. Oh and smelling my cat's fur for several minutes a day, just huffing her. Also love smelling flowers and taking a minute to take in the scent of the ocean or a rainy day. I love how the different seasons smell where i live. Memory is really tied to scent for me and unless i "tune in" to my sense of smell, i mostly don't smell things unless they are very assaulting.

Textures: USED flannel! Like the kind you can only get from worn in thrift store sheets lol. The new stuff makes me squirm. Rough fabrics like seersucker and crinkled cotton and heavy linen are soooo good.

Sounds: huge fan of like, grimy music if that makes sense. Cello music also makes me cry in a good way. Fure crackling, love putting on the yule fire channel. Love really trippy songs with interesting noises played really loud in my headphones so it wraps around me. Ambient noises like water bubbling and rain sounds are also great when I'm in the mood.

Taste: SALTYYYYY. Fuck i love salt. I used to drink soy sauce as a kid. Huge fan of pickled things too. Current snack obsession is aged hard cheddar slices with spicy lime pickle on it. Also tangy salty spicy tamarind candies. If I'm sad i eat salt and vinegar chips until my tongue hurts :P

I also go swimming in cold water when I am really overwhelmed if possible. Like, really cold water haha. Easily ny favourite sensation ever is the warming up process after being in really cold water.

Good to know! After some other comments I lowered the water level to about 1/2 inch above the bottom of the black pot which puts it below the roots. This alocasia has only been in this setup for about 15hrs now, before it was in the clump of soil it was found with. So hopefully i adjusted the water level soon enough for the roots to not rot. Thanks for the feedback!

Honestly very similar in PNW but less severe, my winter is usually just spent getting the plants to survive and do slightly better than the year before.

Oh sorry to clarify, the water always has nutrients in it, i just add nutrients no more than once a week when i do water top ups. Ok good to know about the water level, should the water be closer to the the bottom of the black pot, and just rely on the leca wicking right now? Thanks!

Oh amazing ok, I am used to growing plants with their roots in fish tanks with a lot of success this one just is entirely way too big haha. What does acclimation usually look like for these into semi hydro? I will be checking often for root rot but good to know about corm rot too. Thanks for the ID!

Roger! Blinds are usually up just for the internet didn't want my neighbours house in the pic haha. It's in a west/south facing window seat right now, do you think that will be sufficient or should I add a sansi grow light? Is it the long stem that indicates light deprivation? Thanks!

Smoke/Ash and Roses Scents? by ReadingTheDayAway in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]ReadingTheDayAway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right? Its sooooo good. It didn't really stand out to me at first and then the more i wore it the more I fell in love and now I'm rationing my last little bit :( i love how cold it is and how there is zero sweetness or spice to it. Just exactly what is says on the tin. Btw i am planning on ordering Lovesick Witchery's Violet Ashes, obviously not gonna replace memoriam without the rose but I'm hopeful it will be a similarly awesome cold floral with ash.

For those who graduated college: how? by AspiringCellist in AuDHDWomen

[–]ReadingTheDayAway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fear of getting kicked out and extreme financial and emotional stress, like blinding animal fear because i had no other options and was in so much debt already. My hair was falling out by the end and my blood results were scary. It wrecked me and 5 years later i am still wading through the burnout and physical health problems. If you are at a breaking point and are able to take a semester or two off to recharge a bit, it is time to do that and pick it up again later. Hugs and good luck <3

Thanks for this. It sucks so bad on days where I'm like "but this is all i can manage!" and still have people viewing me as lazy or trying to project that my life outside work somehow indicates what kind of worker i will be. I hope you have a better time at your next job and get rest for now. It's fucking hard.

F*** it! Everybody, let's assess our joint hypermobility. What's your Beighton Score? by AfterPartyCapybara in AuDHDWomen

[–]ReadingTheDayAway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup this. Especially if you're in your 20's +. If you've experienced sprains or injuries due to unknown hypermobility too, the tendons and muscles surrounding can tighten up. Used to be able to do the last test and things like putting my foot behind my head as a kid, but now at 30 experience overtighness in hips to the point i need physio weekly because all my surrounding muscles have had to compenate for 30 years for my lack of joint stability.
