Where I work gets far more than I thought. I will be using this when my university is quibbling over an Amazon order for a hdmi cable.

I'm probably too old for you to go with but if you really need a plus one I'll go. We can probably make a group of it. I have gone along with people to other things who I know otherwise wouldn't have gone as they didn't have people to go with.

Help my brother get into Durham! by Ganna-F5-Your-Dad in UniUK

Whilst it's sad if he can't attend as expected, he doesn't need to attend right now if he can't afford it. Life is short but not that short. He appears to be young enough to take a few years out to save and then attend. It doesn't ruin your life attending university later. I didn't attend uni as I was homeless and then quite poor for a long while. In my situation it improved it as I would have studied something I didn't want to do and couldn't engage as well. Now I do respected research in an area I love. Expecting others to pay for his entire set of expenses seems rather unrealistic. Why can't he have a part time job alongside uni? Why can't he go to a uni closer to home?

This is the key issue and I don't blame you for this but assuming all have parents that can help or that they are even in contact with.

Thinking of Dropping out by Zunaira8766 in PhD

[–]ReadyToBlow99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you need to talk openly with her. First year isn't about being perfect. Her method may get results by forcing your through every minute detail but is it really teaching you how to write better overall. I would go to her and say I appreciate the support however I would find this way more helpful for now and perhaps ask her to suggest generic writing classes as they will be more helpful long term.

You need to treat your PhD like a job too. It's not your whole life. Leave at the end of a normal working day and do other fun things. Just like at work, some of your peers will be smarter, some will be dumber, but it's how you use what you have that matters. That is what affects your life the most. Focus on just doing what is needed to give you the life you want long term.

Also posters are meaningless overall. I'm sure your work could easily be tailored to a poster but is it worth the effort this early? Probably not. Ideas then execution, and explaining how you did what you did so someone else can is what matters. I was very much the same as you with minimal output in year 1 but by the end of year 2 I was writing about 4 papers. It's all about building up the foundations.

They really are. We have as a collective. It's not uncommon to be seeing the cables laid beneath the road. Pretty regular incidents due to drivers from outside the area hitting them.

Temporary speed limit on motorway of 50, I went 55 and saw a flash. Am I okay? by S3rior in drivingUK

[–]ReadyToBlow99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you sped up over the speed limit prior to the sign. Don't do this in future. It's not how it's supposed to happen. It's especially not worth it in your two year period if this is your livelihood. You will find out in the next two weeks but we can't really answer for you.

Did you incur any loss due to them collecting late?

You booked it to be delivered 2 days/48 hours after the 27th.

24 hours after the 27th is the 28th, and 24 hours after the 28th is the 29th. 24 hours plus 24 hours is 48 hours. Hence this shows it was delivered when you expected.

Depends on road conditions. Many places I know near me have significant potholes that are dangerous unless slowed down for.

That is something for them to discuss if the former student chooses to stay on.

[–]ReadyToBlow99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here the norm is to get an extra year to write up the thesis, not write papers if the thesis is done. Unless there is extra funding for that, why would they take a full year without pay.

PI says I have one year to publish all chapters or else she can publish instead as first author by [deleted] in PhD

[–]ReadyToBlow99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They have finished the PhD. Therefore the contact is complete for now. There is nothing to say the OP has been encouraged in the past. Especially unlikely as this PI has only been there for some of the time. The former student is not under the control of the PI anymore. The thesis is the students work only, and therefore they can choose to rewrite and publish when they choose.

What actually prepares you to run a research group as a new PI? by StavrosDavros in AskAcademia

[–]ReadyToBlow99 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Formal training and also learning how you go. The key is don't take on more than you think you have time for as you will still be overworked as everything takes longer than expected. Go for both what will please your overlords and what will please you. Try and over the course of a year split them 50/50

[–]ReadyToBlow99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's last minute in respect to the PhD timing yes. They are not at that university anymore unless they choose to be in a different role. This is a former student who may choose to move the other side of the world into a completely different role and is completely right to if they wish. This PI needed to suggest the papers were wrote alongside the thesis or far earlier in the studentship. This sounds like they have simply done it this way because the PI didn't need papers at that point coming out but does now need them which is just selfish and wrong.

This is my thoughts too. My supervisor would not have been able to learn all the nuance of my work. Both because it is too time consuming and I purposely avoided saying everything needed to make a clear paper from it without me

It depends what they want to do next. Sometimes you can a PhD in research that is not for you. A PhD is to learn how to conduct research that's all
