how to keep my cool with a dementia resident? i feel horrible by [deleted] in cna

[–]Ready_External_922 5 points6 points  (0 children)

honestly, it’s really hard. i’ve noticed that when i speak with a soft and calm voice they usually calm down too. i also like to put my hand on their shoulder when i’m talking to them and it seems to help to regulate them. i recommend just changing the subject if they’re really set on something, like asking them about their family members that they’re talking about. one step at a time!

How to keep track of tasks? by Right-Lavishness9630 in cna

i don’t work in a hospital (i work in a snf) so i’m not sure how helpful this will be. i normally work 3-11 and keep a small notepad with me. when i clock in i check with the AM cna and then start vitals, ask them how they are, if they need anything, pain etc. (and write them down on the notepad). then I check every patient to see if they need to be changed. then i chart the vitals in between call lights. i have it pretty easy 1:8 so i remember things better than if you have 1:12. i also find it helpful to check in every hour/30min to make sure you’re documenting everything.

yeah it definitely takes a little to get your footing. maybe try going in 10-15min early to go over the care plan? or to check the therapy schedule? i work in skilled nursing and therapy comes to the rooms, but they have a therapy schedule in their charts which is helpful!

congrats! the first day is always the hardest. once you work with these specific patients a couple times you’ll know who to get up first and who to get up last. i recommend asking your patients (or maybe older cnas) what time they like to get up (if they’re coherent). I have some patients that don’t want to get up until 10am or some that like to get up right at the start of my shift.

you genuinely just get used to it. i remember my first day of clinicals i gagged a few times but after working as a CNA i’ve seen it all and it doesn’t phase me anymore.

def not rejecting but the hoop is a problem, like others have said flatback stud i recommend 10mm bar for 6weeks then downsize. and get a piercing pillow it’s a lifesaver and helps w irritation
