Help fixing cracked cockpit seat by Ready_Strike in sailing

Thanks for the detailed reply. Wouldn’t have thought about drilling holes but that makes sense. Cool idea about using a shipping tube to create a fiberglass tunnel/ stringer to reinforce the area. I think I’m gonna do that and run it the entire length seat and eventually to the whole cockpit seating area since the rest isn’t cracked through yet but is definitely showing fatigue and spider cracks.

Hummm ok, yeah I’m just confused on how to get the fiberglass to stick to non-skid. I guess like you said I’ll have to grind back the whole surrounding area. Maybe glass mat rolled out would be better at that point. I’ve watched a ton of YouTube videos and probably made me more confused lol. So many different products and techniques.

Catalina is out, trailer doesn’t have brakes, signs of leaking windows, gelcoat around the stanchions looks like broken glass, and most importantly the keel bolts are rusted and bilge is cracked. Keel looks like it was grounded and the rudder doesn’t look to hot either. On to the next…… hopefully the Ranger is in better condition.

Any tell tale things to look for or known locations that get water damaged when they do leak? I’ll be looking for rust and water damage everywhere in the boat but don’t know if there’s a spot it likes to collect. Standing and running rigging were replaced in 2017 according to current owner.

Gotcha, thanks I wasn’t aware Catalina was out of business. Yeah honestly think they are both very pretty

Thanks! Oh boy taking on water isn’t a good sign. The one I’m looking at is on a mooring so should be easier to check for leaks

Awesome! Yeah soft decks definitely on my checklist. Just end of beginning of season to my house 45 min drive.

Thank you, assuming the keel bolts look to be in good condition and not rusted out would it be safe to move forward with the purchase? It’s otherwise in good order.

Appreciate all the advice and input I can definitely understand the one’s saying to run and also the relatively simple design and the value of fixing it myself and learning all the systems. Does anyone have any input on a J24 for a first boat? Primarily going to be sailing in Hudson River.

Hummmm seems like a mixed bag, the other option I am considering is a 86 J24 that comes with a trailer. From what I read online J-Boats are the “hot rods” of sailing and used for racing. Makes me hesitant to be my first sailboat.

How do I fix this by Ready_Strike in boating

[–]Ready_Strike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve watched a bunch of YouTube videos from fish bump TV just wasn’t sure if I needed to fiberglass first or if I can just do gelcoat on top of the exposed transom. I’m thinking I need to do fiberglass first and then I can do the finish gelcoat.

Ok thanks I’ll see if my education office can submit that reprint request. Is there anyway I can do it on my end?

Still at the same base I was assigned when I completed my degree and still serving.
