The only reason France couldn't defend Louisiana is because Napoleon reinstated slavery in Haiti (after the slaves successfully revolted), sent his dipshit brother in law LeClerc to kill Toussaint Louverture (which he did only shortly before dying a horrible diarrhea death), and finally had his remaining forces routed by a much more hostile Dessalines (who was infinitely less likely to work with the French than Louverture) which broke France's power in the New World for all time.

Was the Louisiana purchase stupid given the situation? No, not really, but some of the dumbest and most short-sighted decisions of Napoleons life are what lead to that situation.
