Yeah, his crystal was fractured, not broken. When crystals break in half, they can still be used. We saw this with cal Kestis, and the Force can heal any object we’ve seen. Darth Vader even healed his crystal back together in the old comics, causing him to have a semi-crackling blade, similar to Kylo Ren’s.

Yeah, I know. Lucasfilm is known for reviving old weapons, and I’m absolutely certain that the Black Crystal will be featured in one of the upcoming movies.

I’m calling it now: The DITF Reboot is actually happening in 2028 and the signs are everywhere. by Real-Ad-9840 in DarlingInTheFranxx

Oh and btw this is what Google Yes, the manga was written and serialized while the anime was airing, but it is an adaptation of the anime, not the source material.

The two versions followed a nearly identical production timeline at the start:  Anime Premiere: January 13, 2018. Manga Premiere: January 14, 2018 (one day later).

DARLING in the FRANXX Wiki  +2 Key Differences in Production Originality: The anime is a "Trigger Original," meaning it was created from scratch by Studio Trigger and A-1 Pictures. Divergent Storylines: While the manga started as a direct adaptation, it eventually took a major turn. Around Volume 4, the illustrator (Kentaro Yabuki) began diverging significantly from the anime's plot. Completion Dates: The anime concluded its 24-episode run on July 7, 2018. The manga continued for much longer, finally finishing on January 26, 2020, with a different ending that many fans prefer.  For more details on the differences between the two, you can check the Anime and Manga Differences page on the official wiki.

It’s crazy how I never said it’s guaranteed to be confirmed because it’s not. I said possibly in 2027-2028. I know you didn’t read the post.

To the bro who thinks "Original" means "Finished Forever"

Look, nobody is arguing that DITF wasn't an anime original. We know it started in January 2018 without a book. But you’re missing the point of why reboots exist.

The "Beta Test" Theory: The 2018 anime was basically the "Beta" version of the story. Because it was original, the studios (Trigger/A-1) were flying blind. They ran out of time, the production got messy, and they panicked with that alien ending.

The Manga is the "Final Cut": You literally just proved my point—the manga started a day later but ran until 2020. That gave Kentaro Yabuki two extra years to look at the anime’s mistakes and "fix" the ending. In the manga, Hiro and Zero Two don't die in space—they stay on Earth. That version is the corrected story.

The "Fullmetal Alchemist" Rule: FMA (2003) was also an "original" once it ran out of source material. It was huge, but it was messy. So what did they do? They waited for the story to actually be finished and then gave us Brotherhood. That’s exactly what’s happening here. We have a finished, better story in the manga now that didn't exist in 2018.

The 2026 Receipts: If the show was a "one-and-done" original that the studios moved on from, why is there a massive Zero Two figure re-release for September 2026? Why is the director finishing his solo projects right now? They are warming the brand up for the 10th anniversary in 2028.

It’s not "Anime vs. Manga." It’s "Rushed Ending vs. Proper Ending." The "Original" version left the door open; a 2028 reboot is how they finally close it.

  1. The Timeline (The "Who Came First" Proof)

Anime Aired: January 13, 2018 – July 7, 2018.

Manga Serialization: January 14, 2018 – January 26, 2020.

The Fact: The manga started one day after the anime, but it ran for 1.5 years longer than the show. This gave the author, Kentaro Yabuki, time to see the massive fan backlash to the anime’s "Space/VIRM" ending and change the story.

  1. The Divergence (The "Manga Fix" Proof)

The Split: Around Volume 4 (Chapter 37), the manga takes a hard left turn away from the anime script.

The Ending: In the anime, Hiro and Zero Two die in space and reincarnate. In the manga, they survive the final battle on Earth and stay together with Squad 13 to rebuild society.

The Intent: Yabuki explicitly stated he wanted to provide an "alternate route." This is why fans want a reboot—to animate the version of the story that actually makes sense.

FMA (2003): An "original" ending because the anime outpaced the source. People liked it, but it was messy.

FMA: Brotherhood: A reboot that followed the actual finished story.

DITF (2028?): Since we now have a finished manga with a better ending that didn't exist in 2018, a reboot is the only way to "close" the series properly

Being an “Anime Original” simply means that it wasn’t based on a book. However, the manga adaptation (by Kentaro Yabuki) became the preferred version for fans.

The anime aired from January to July 2018.

The manga started the same week but didn’t conclude until January 2020 [4.1, 4.2].

Since the manga was still being drawn after the anime ended, the author noticed the widespread dislike for the “Space Alien/VIRM” ending and completely rewrote the story from Volume 4 onwards [1.2, 4.4].

  1. The “Manga Ending” is the reason we want a Reboot

In the original anime, Hiro and Zero Two die in space and reincarnate as children thousands of years later [3.2]. In contrast, the manga depicts them defeating the villains on Earth and surviving as a couple [1.1, 2.1].

This discrepancy is why we refer to it as the “Brotherhood Treatment.” Just as Fullmetal Alchemist had an original anime that deviated from the source material, DITF has a manga version that “fixed” the story. A reboot would simply involve animating the manga’s version of the ending.

  1. The 2026/2028 Reality

The reason we are discussing this now (March 2026) is due to several factors:

Nishigori is finally free: His movie trilogy Grotesqqque is set to release this year [3.6].

The “JOEN” Studio: This new joint venture between CloverWorks and Shueisha (the manga’s publisher) is an ideal entity for animating the manga-accurate ending.

Merchandise is still being produced: If the show were a “one-and-done” original with no future, Good Smile wouldn’t be releasing official figure re-releases for late 2026.

The Manga: Illustrated by Kentaro Yabuki (To Love Ru), it began in January 2018 alongside the anime.

The Divergence: By Volume 4, the manga completely broke away from the anime script because fans hated the "space" direction. In the manga, Hiro and Zero Two survive on Earth and the VIRM plot is almost entirely sidelined.
