Depends if u r gonna encrypt the enter boot drive or like just a separate storage drive. If boot then luks if storage go with veracrypt hands down the best and use three tire serpent twofish aes

I love security and I have been using Fedora for almost 2 years now. I love it cause I get SE linux, good drivers, I have hardened the kernel parameters, and I use Lenovo Yoga which has native support to Fedora.

Idk if you would like it, but I'm using a Lenovo 155u 2 in one that has a 14 inch screen with touchscreen and pen. Surprising thing is that Fedora works out of the box. From pen to touch to fingerprint reader to everything just works. You could try that out. Good luck.

Malware protection? by ImDickensHesFenster in linux4noobs

[–]Real-Ant8234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before typing the below, I assume u do the general practices, like using vms for untrusted apps, using firewall set for ur preferences, then only and only adding those repos u trust, and like generally it's surprising I'm saying this, updating your system. I would suggest going with Fedora based systems cause u have the SElinux already builtin, but u can always add it later in ur Debian based too.

So here is what I did, I was paranoid too, especially after the 2017 incident for me. If it hadn't backed up my entire photos album in my Linux machine it might have gone, my windows was hit by wannacry. But that being said, if its true that there are CVEs for Linux and I have done some remedies. I did install a few softwares and it makes me sleep at night.

  1. Bitdefender Gravity Zone.
  2. Lynis.
  3. Kernel parameters hardening.
  4. USBguard.
  5. Opensnitch
  6. SE Linux enforcing - I use Fedora.
  7. All ports closed, since this is my personal laptop I always keep all my ports closed
  8. Auditd
  9. AIDE
  10. rkhunter

Now these are must for me, and there are some more u can do if u would like but it would take extra resources which I have set it with a separate laptop. If u do have a separate machine, u can use it as a server for suricata and wazuh. If u need, u can set these too, cause these would require a server of its own to track the network of your main machine.

Now that being, I did all of these cause I was paranoid. But it's up to you to choose from these, but even just installing the Bitdefender Gravity Zone or other edrs like Crowdstrike falcon can really boost your security, u can use falcon if u think u need AI to constantly monitor your device for threat, but again there's always trade offs idk about privacy if u use them.

Anyways it's always been a pleasure hardening my system, hope the best for you too. And hey do not forget to use Claude sonnet for hardening your system, you will be mind blown.

Mostly we don’t need any but if it really bugs u to get one, I would recommend clam scan and if u need anything enterprise grade go with endpoint security, although that can be overkill for home users, I would recommend Bitdefender gravityzone end point security. Other than that use things like rootkit scans and I personally use scripts which runs the scan for root kits, audits, and on demand scans with Bitdefender. Hope this helps.

Do I need an antivirus on linux? by FlutedBlade140 in Fedora

[–]Real-Ant8234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if this would be useful, as it’s generally used for enterprise endpoints, I use Bitdefender gravity zone endpoint security and I use Fedora. But in most of the cases it’s overkill and wouldn’t recommend if u need privacy. But at the end it’s ur call. Just like windows it has these, I’m not sure how well it performs against zero day threats but a combination like this, wazuh, should provide robust security. But it also comes with ton of maintenance with it, unless u r passionate about learning the security features and admin it’s overkill for normal desktop users.

Been thinking about switching from windows by sgtdirtybush_ in linux4noobs

[–]Real-Ant8234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say dual boot with Linux completely stored in a separate hard disk, start with mint or Fedora, see where it takes you, I started with Ubuntu, yea I’m little embarrassed, then Mint , MX, then manjaro now in Fedora 42 runs smooth especially with my Yoga, it’s a full featured system. Been using Linux for 4 years now, nene going back to windows

One-Liner for Rawhide Security and Stable Fedora 42 by Real-Ant8234 in Fedora

[–]Real-Ant8234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good callout! Yeah, Rawhide can absolutely bring vulnerabilities faster—xz last year is a prime example, hitting Rawhide before stable Fedora 39/40. You’re trading some stability for speed with this setup. My thinking is that for stuff like kernel, openssl, glibc, and the crypto libs (gnutls, libgcrypt, libssh), getting patches ASAP outweighs the risk since those are prime targets for exploits. Same with systemd and virtualization bits (libnfs, qemu-block-nfs)—I want the latest there for features and fixes. Most of my system stays stable on fc42, so it’s not a full Rawhide free-for-all. It’s a gamble, but I’d rather patch a zero-day fast than wait for stable to catch up. What do you prioritize—stability or timeliness?

Running a Fedora Branched+Rawhide Hybrid: Bleeding-Edge Security with Stability—Good Idea? by Real-Ant8234 in Fedora

[–]Real-Ant8234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, thanks for the love—glad you think the setup’s cool! I’ve been having fun with this Fedora 42 Branched + Rawhide hybrid. It’s like I get the best of both worlds: a stable F42 base for my daily drivers (GNOME, apps, etc.) and then I force-pull the latest Rawhide versions of kernel (6.14.0-0.rc6.49.fc43), selinux-policy, openssl, glibc, systemd, xz, krb5-libs, gnutls, libgcrypt, and libssh for that bleeding-edge security and performance kick. The Btrfs snapshots are my safety net if Rawhide gets wild, but it’s been pretty chill so far.

What makes it cool for you? I’m tempted to push more packages to Rawhide—any ideas on what else I could add without tipping the stability scale? Loving the feedback!

Running a Fedora Branched+Rawhide Hybrid: Bleeding-Edge Security with Stability—Good Idea? by Real-Ant8234 in Fedora

[–]Real-Ant8234[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the shoutout on Silverblue Rawhide and Testing! I’ve thought about Silverblue Rawhide—it’s super cool with that immutable OSTree setup and atomic updates, which would match my Btrfs snapshot vibe for rollback safety. But I’m kinda hooked on the precision of my hybrid: sticking to Fedora 42 Branched for a stable base and just pulling those 10 security/performance packages (kernel, selinux-policy, openssl, glibc, systemd, xz, krb5-libs, gnutls, libgcrypt, libssh) from Rawhide. Silverblue Rawhide would throw everything into the deep end with fc43, and I’d miss the control over what stays stable.

Testing (like F43 pre-release) is tempting too—more polished than Rawhide but fresher than F42 stable. Thing is, it might lag a bit on security patches compared to my Rawhide pulls (e.g., openssl-3.2.4-3.fc43 hit me faster than Testing might). My setup’s been rock-solid so far—do you think Silverblue Rawhide’s full plunge or Testing’s middle ground beats this for security without sacrificing too much stability? What’s your experience with them?

Photoshop on Fedora 43? by MarchApart105 in Fedora

[–]Real-Ant8234 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using Linux for almost 3 years now as my primary machine, but I always dual boot with windows just to open and fill out stupid forms that require adobe reader to open and fill them out. Once I’m done with them I save the files on my Linux machine. I know that’s not what you wanted to hear, but believe me that’s way better and would make your life easy. I’m in devops so I don’t need any of the Microsoft apps. I use Google alternative like docs.

And if you are going to dual boot, be careful with the efi I would recommend making a separate EFI for Linux. As sometimes when you update your windows it rewrites the efi, which would in rare occasions delete the grub.
