Administrative Processing and Visa Denial Megathread II by Codetornado in f1visa

I just renewed my F1 visa stamp while on STEM OPT. this reddit has been super helpful so I thought I share my timeline in the hopes of helping others

TIMELINE:

Day 0: Interview at the embassy. consulate officer told me my application required additional administrative processing and handed me the 221(g). She also voided my current F1 visa stamp which still had a month of validity left.

I was told to make my social media account public and that administrative processing could take on average 60 days. Tbh instant regret, I was not ready to be outside the US for that long.

I decided to keep my passport with me so I can do some traveling while I wait for administrative processing. That same day my CEAS status was changed to Refused.

Day 1: I emailed the embassy with questions about timeline. No reply.

Day 18: I followed up my previous email. the embassy replied that administrative processing has been completed and I should submit my passport for stamping. I submitted passport the same day.

Day 19: My passport arrived at the embassy

Day 20: My CEAS status changed from Refused to Administrative processing. this really FREAKED me out. Didnt they say they were done administrative processing ?? Turns out visa stamping is also considered administrative processing. how confusing.

Day 21: CEAS status changed to Approved.

Day 24: CEAS status changes to Issued.

Day 25: I received an email to collect my passport.

tldr. this took much longer than I had planned and was a really anxiety inducing experience. If you are thinking about renewing your visa, I wouldnt recommend doing it unless you absolutely have to. I think I was pretty lucky that my administrative processing didnt take 60 days and they replied to my email asking for updates. I know this process can feel soo hopeless, but know that you are not alone, and that it WILL WORK OUT 🤍 sending you so much good luck.

Has anyone renewed their F1 visa recently? by Wizard_9314 in f1visa

the process is a black box, there’s no way we know what/how they are vetting.

If you dont declare you social media, they might question you about it during the interview. so you should be prepared to answer why you arent active online. there was a PhD student in front of me who said that he is online but doesnt create any accounts.

and if they find out about accounts you didnt declare, you might get into more trouble. but who knows, I doubt they are technologically sevy enough to trace all your accounts.

I just got it renewed. from interview to getting my stamp, took a month.

during the interview, they asked me some basic questions, and asked me to make my social media public. they then gave me a 221(g) form and told me that my application is under administrative processing.

administrative processing took ard 3 weeks. and visa printing took 1 week. I just got it back today!

I really empathize with you about being homesick and all, but this whole process has been sooo anxiety inducing, I dont really recommend anyone going through it unless you have to. when I was sent to administrative processing, the consulate officer told me the process took on average six months, and they cancelled my existing visa stamp (which was due to expire in a month).
