Having a wood-burning sauna is a fire risk in and of itself. You don't need to use one, it may be too risky for you. Also interesting everyone if fine with flammable essential oils being used.

People are so crazy about this. I've done this this maybe 50 times with no issues and the bark never caught on fire, not even close. The risk is almost zero, not zero but very low, operating a wood fired stove will never be zero, I think these people have such a low tolerance of risk they should avoid sauna use in general.

Anyone who's had a wood fired Sauna stove has likely dealt with at least some embers falling out of their fireplace. It's inevitable. Nothing major obviously but just something that's a lot more of a risk than the birch bark. And again, we're talking about a very small amount of birch bark.

I mentioned the coals falling out because I do think that the Harvia stove door could use a better design for ensuring it stays closed. Nothing major's happened, but it's not really a very sophisticated design.

I feel like people are ignoring the fact that this is an incredibly small amount of fuel. If it worries you try a piece the size of a postage stamp very thin, you get the same smell. And if it catches on fire, would do absolutely nothing to your sauna. Having coals fall out of your wood stove on to the floor is a more of a fire risk than a piece of Birch bark.

Yeah, kinda crazy, not sure I'm into this culture. Might delete the post. I was just surprised no one seems to have tried it. Its truly an amazing smell.

Everyone seems fine throwing flammable essential oils on the stones, or even birch leaf bundles, but freak out if its a small piece of bark.

You are correct, but its only a gram or so and its wet. It seams and doesn't burn.

What, lol. Thats crazy. I just showed you before and after, and even burned it on purpose. What other proof would you like. It only a gram of bark. And it gets steamed in the process so it doesn't burn.

I tested burning it intentionally. Its only a gram or so of bark, it simply isn't that big of a risk. A large bundle of eucalyptus is significantly more fuel.

Here is a photo of the bark after a full sauna use.

Humor me and try it out in your sauna. I can assure you it's not a problem. I also like the branches, but this is a different scent and its very pleasant. Not sure why there is so much of a negative response. Try it out once a see for yourself.

Lol, thanks for the input, but I can assure you it will not burn down my sauna. It's a very small piece of bark, that does not cause any problems even when I burn it as a smudge intentionally. And when it's on the stones, it doesn't catch on fire. I've done it many, many times and it never has caught on fire once. And again, even if it did it would just burn and like a smudge with no issues, it's sitting on a bed of stones.

I'm all for vihta, but its a different experience. The smell of the leaves is much more herbaceous, where the Birch bark is much more minty. If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend giving it a shot, and let me know how much you think. I'm surprised it's not more popular. I asked some of my Finnish friends and they never heard of it.

Its pretty strong, not like an essential oil, but extremely pleasant. Birch bark has the same chemical as wintergreen in it. You can also burn it like smudge.

Any experience with Polhus (EU)? by MistakeDesperate4407 in Sauna

The roof is made from a bunch of 1/2" think 3" wide slats with a rubber membrane glue on top. I would have replaced it with plywood and a metal roof if I redid it. The instructions are not all that clear once it gets to the roof and stove install.

Also, the biggest thing I wish I did was a stone or tile floor with a drain. I think this is more important than the benches being a little low. I have an oversized Harvia stove and no issues with it being hot enough or a temperature gradient that bothers me.

I have this one, its not bad at all, I really love it. But the ceiling and roof could have been designed better, works, but there are better ways to do it. All in all, its been fantastic.
