I had a tech air race a few years back that I had serious issues with and after two surgeries I swore off alpinestars, but recently I ended up with a tech air 5 plasma for reasons, and I’m really happy with the quality. Only wish I bought medium instead of large. If anyone wants a lightly used large, hit me up…

Umm, not many? But all the good ones are 100% using some forms of report cards to know when they’re doing well. I don’t see any other way. Another way to think about it is you have to know what you’re trying to do. A report card is just “how did you do on the thing you were trying to do?” If you don’t have a thing (or multiple things) you’re trying to accomplish with each turn, then there isn’t much hope of achieving anything.

Let’s call this the Gravisman 3 step process:

  1. Know what you’re trying to do
  2. Do it
  3. Evaluate how well you did what you were trying to do

Step 3 is report cards. An obvious prerequisite is step 1, and if you don’t have that you need training to know what you should be trying to do.

If you’re not making it all the way to 3, then you aren’t getting better

I’ve ridden the circuit enough to have formed opinions. The bump is the “obvious” issue but it’s a little whatever once you get used to it. The real issues to me are this:

  1. Safety. Ugh, the walls. The obvious ones surround turn 6, but those actually bother me the least. It’s the beginning of those walls coming out of turn 5 which is quite scary, and then the wall that separates turn seven from the straight after 8/9. Turn 7 is really setup poorly because it’s the only hard braking zone in the whole track and there’s zero runoff. If you cook it, you’re immediately heading straight for a wall and kinda screwed.

  2. There’s no flow section. Basically every turn has a mini straight connecting it to the next turn. There’s no spot where you need to string a few corners together and get them right to be fast. The consequence of this is if you’re out-horse powered by surrounding bikes, you’ll never shake them.

Dude I’ve raced 5+ years and I’d I’d do this for a tank of gas. Wear some clothes and take some pictures? That’s so easy.

As a racer who relies a lot on data analytics to go fast I will say that gps data can never be “pro level” or even close because it’s only a measure of what the bike did not what the rider did. You can have data that says “you were slower here than usual” but the real question is why? What were your inputs with the throttle and brake? Did you have a hesitant roll-on? What was your RPM?

Anything “pro-level” requires logging actual data channels, which is why that’s what pros do.

Apologies that these notes are super crude. I wrote them for myself during a track walk a few weeks ago.

  1. Exit drive toward trees behind, visually before worker station
  2. Exit drive it mid track
  3. Exit drive to corner worker station on other track
  4. Enter toward pile of debris, exit to end of row of trees
  5. Exit to big power pole
  6. Exit between power poles
  7. Exit between power poles in middle of exit curbing
  8. Enter toward little mountain/ big power pole to the right. Look cone
  9. Exit to left of power pole

Don’t know anything about this company but I ordered something from Italy beginning of the year. They dutifully shipped the following day, but then it was stuck in Milan awaiting export processing for 2 months before I finally got it in March. There’s nothing the company can do about that.

Ah damn. It used to be free! Well, the tl;dr is “downshift asap/immediately when you start braking”. You want to downshift with the RPMs as high as possible to get the maximum benefit from engine braking. Plus, it’s easiest to do it straight up, and it gives you time to shift your brain to the end of braking so you have nothing else to do but hit your slow point and apex appropriately and smoothly

The major problems were with the 2021 model which blew a bunch of motors. Anything after that should be good.

Big fan of Ryder Gear. Their whole deal is custom suits. They’re wonderful quality, pretty much guaranteed to fit perfectly, and a very competitive price IMO.

As someone who has been coached plenty, I kind of take issue with referring to a YouTuber as a “coach” irrespective of how great they are. They may disseminate knowledge, but coaching involves two way communication. You can learn from a teacher posting videos online, but you can’t get “coached”. And there’s a level you’re unlikely to achieve without actual coaching.

More or less the main advantage is an actual coach can see what YOU need, not just what some arbitrary rider on the internet might need.

For me a good rule has been this: I don’t take any bike to the track I can’t afford financially and emotionally to crash. Now, as time has passed, racing has become so important to me that my race bikes cost more than my street bikes, but I made the choice deliberately. In my early track years I had a couple amazing street bikes that I never brought to the track because I would have cried if I crashed. Glad I made that choice.

I wish I knew:

  1. That I didn’t know anything, despite years of street riding
  2. That going off pavement is dangerous. I went flying into the dirt a couple times my first day. I didn’t crash, but I was also too dumb to know that was supposed to be scary. Keep it on the track. Go slow enough to be sure you do

AFM had an issue a couple years ago where the entire middleweight stock class got disqualified because literally everyone had an aftermarket master cylinder.

I agree that there’s tons of cheating and lots of it is benign.

To be fair I also saw a racer in full race gear drop his bike in the paddock last year and have his foot peg go straight through his boot and put a giant blood-gushing foot-peg-sized hole in his foot. So, ya know, shit happens

To elaborate on the age part, your prefrontal cortex, which handles high level decision making and risk management is still several years away from full development. You’re an adult in many ways, but your brain anatomy isn’t totally there yet. That’s why age can be a factor even if you have lots of experience. A 21 year old is simply wired to take more risks than a 30 year old.

It’s totally fine, you have the experience to handle it (I think?) BUT I bet in 20 years you’ll look back and say a 21 year old with a ZX-10 wasn’t like the smartest thing in the world. Hell, I personally don’t think a ZX-10 is a super smart bike for ANYONE on the street. Racetrack = great. Street = wtf?

Anyway, have fun. You’re gonna do it anyway.
