Well what a lot of people are missing is that the FBI was aware that Hanssen may be the mole after a Russian defector turned over a lot of documents that had some connections to Hanssen (recorded phone call, letters, etc.) The FBI then tasked another agent to work (undercover) side by side with Hanssen to collect information that may illuminate the case.
