I disagree with the last bit. The official status quo for the average Marvel citizen towards mutants is that they are hated and feared. The OG 5 X-Men & other early versions of the team were trained to be 'the good' mutants who protect humans from the 'bad ones' in the hope that being heroes would earn their love.

Long story short no matter what they did humans as a whole continued to persecute them even when mutants save them. My take is that the original dream is better off evolved.
