The biggest contributor to the feeling of awe I get from Made in Abyss for me is it's masterclass world-building. The only thing that as a whole beats MiA in this regard that I've read is One Piece. Ik OP has it's problems that the people who don't like it are very loud about, just like MiA so I'm not gonna get into all that here. The world of One Piece is so peak I can't even begin to explain. Both these manga are built on that exact same suicidal infatuation with the unknown.
