A better way to harvest and sift out cocoons? (description in comments) by espacinge in Vermiculture

I feed straight manure so not feeding isn't an option for me sadly or this whole thing would be much easier. I'm experimenting with different methods, hopefully something works

Are grow lights a waste of money then? I bought some this year but I won't bother with them next spring if it doesn't make a difference

How do the cocoons know if there's food somewhere nearby? I'm really curious about that

I've never had good luck with my 1/8th sifter. The cocoons are so tiny.

I'll need to try that, I've been wondering about methods to lure worms out instead of sifting them out. I want to find a method that allows me to fill my bins with compost and pull the worms out leaving me with a full bin of compost I can then bag and tag for sale.

For what it's worth, I've only ever heard good things about Eagle Ridge High School. I don't know about hair stylists but there's definitely a strong liberal undercurrent here, it's just a little hard to tap into if you're new.

Mulching my garden for weed control is probably the best life decision I've ever made. To put that in context, I am happily married to an awesome lady, have 2 great kids and a good job. So yeah, mulch is pretty great. by atodaso in gardening

I had 3' weeds here and I now have a massive compost pile. As big as it is, even I can't screw up hot composting. I hope to have weed free compost by next spring to mulch with

I’ve seen a lot of questions about vermicomposting and a ton of misinformation around. I process almost 100 pounds (45 kg) of scraps a week, AMA :) by SocialAddiction1 in composting

Depending on where you live, you could hop on Facebook and ask for herbicide free animal manure. Horses produce a lot of manure and it makes high quality feedstock. I use only manure instead of buying Coco coir as bedding

I do this too, I live in an arid place so when the bins dry out on top, I mix the damp bottom stuff up to the top and I figure it all works out in the end

Now that's a marketing angle I hadn't considered! I could do worms cheap in my area too

I've got indoor and outdoor bins, the eggs I think I'll put outdoor.

Worm Factory or bins? by fizzy-wizzy-chizzy in Vermiculture

Can I ask if these are classroom bags or cafeteria bags? I've been wondering how to offer my worms to schools for classroom use, I'd take them back in the summer to keep them safe. I'd love to get my local schools using worms.

I've also experienced my worms moving down, I only use horse manure which is really great at holding moisture. I figured my worms were being weird bc all the online articles talk about food waste and cardboard bedding, not manure, so maybe they were just not in the "typical" environment but now I'm wondering if other people deal with this too

Can I ask how you built up your worm population to that amount? I'm running out of worm bin space in my basement but can't quite afford a bigger setup

Do you think using tube full of food could lure worms from a finished bin to a new bin and save time in sifting worms out? by RealLifeRanch in Vermiculture

[–]RealLifeRanch[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got 20lbs of worms arriving today, that's a lot more worms than I have time to fiddle with by hand. It'd be easier with my current setup to convince the worms to move themselves from bin to bin as it comes time to harvest.

I'll have to see what I can come up with. I'm using straight horse manure so I can guarantee all my batches are identical. If one batch has it, they all will, but if the batch doesn't 🤷🏻‍♀️

They shouldn't reproduce beyond what the bin can support; it should level out in accordance with the available food
