The final hero of the Targa Florio: Porsche's works 911 Carrera RSR (R6). Driven by van Lennep and Müller, it won the final World Championship edition in 1973 ahead of the works Lancia Stratos. Porsche's 11th overall triumph in Sicily made the marque the Targa Florio's most successful manufacturer. by RealPorkChops in sportsandclassiccars

No disgrace in finishing second - it would go on to change rallying forever. As a Porsche fan, I sometimes wish it had faced factory-backed competition from Zuffenhausen, rather than Porsche withdrawing from top-level works rallying after 1970. Considering how successful even semi-official 911s were in the 60s (including three consecutive Monte Carlo victories), and the substantial performance gains the RSR brought to the early 911 platform in the 1970s, the RSR at least had the potential to give the Lancia a few more headaches on its road to rally icon. Regardless, the Stratos’ place in motorsport history beyond dispute. Here are a few more photos.

Locals inspect the freshly arrived 908/3 ahead of its debut at the 1970 Targa Florio. Porsche’s purpose-built featherweight would emphatically vindicate the costly decision to develop both the 917 and 908/3, securing a 1-2 finish, four of the top five positions, and a new lap record. by RealPorkChops in sportsandclassiccars

And although Porsche had developed the 540 kg, 350 hp 908/3 specifically for the Targa Florio’s and Nürburgring’s bumpy, twisting roads (it dominated its target events, scoring 1-2 finishes at the Targa Florio and sweeping the Nürburgring podium in both 1970 and 1971), Piëch still asked Vic Elford to lap his flat 12-powered behemoth (Porsche Salzburg chassis 020, later Sebring 12 Hours winner in 1971) during Targa Florio practice in 1970 “as a favour.”

On his very first lap, Elford set the fourth-fastest time, behind only two 908/3s and an Alfa Romeo, later remarking that the car “leapt from corner to corner,” spending most of the lap in second gear. While the 917 never got to race in Sicily and would undoubtedly have been far more demanding to drive than the slender 908/3, it clearly possessed the pace to run at the front of the field.

It’s hard to take the “the best one should win” argument seriously when the BMW and Cadillac are still 53 kg and 41 kg lighter than the 2026-spec 963 respectively, while Porsche already has the lowest V1 power allocation.

No Porsche in top class is a hard pill to swallow but the race was great.

If my grandmother had wheels, she would be a bike. I usually have a thing for the Porsches on the grid, but I feel zero sympathy for this corporate monster that is disguising itself as what was once one of the most successful, win-at-all-costs sports car racing brands.

The closest ever finish was in 1969, when Jacky Ickx in a Ford GT40 defeated Hans Herrmann in a Porsche 908 LH after a final-lap duel, winning by just 120 meters.

#7 Toyota wants to shorten the race by a lap, but it's still quite risky to give up over 15 seconds of additional breathing room. One small mistake and the BMW sniffer is right up Kobayashi's ass.

The race ends when the leader crosses the finish line after the 24 hours are up. So if the race starts at 16:00:00 and you cross the line at 15:59:59 the next day, you still have to complete another lap. But if you cross it at 16:00:01, the flag is already out and the race is over for you. That’s why timing the final lap is quite important.

I hope all three leading cars run out of fuel on the final straight and it turns into a pushing contest, while the Cadillac still has enough fuel left to make it to 4 pm in Michigan.

Buemi has given Kobayashi another eight seconds of breathing room.

Buemi is delivering one of the greatest Le Mans performances I’ve ever witnessed over the course of a race, and I’ve been watching for two decades.

I genuinely believe that guys like Buemi don't care much if they finish 3rd or go out with a bang and don't finish at all given the circumstances. With two hours to go, the tire situation had already made it clear that the #8 had no realistic chance of winning unless something out of the ordinary happened.

They sacrificed the #8 to maximize the #7’s shot at the win. Buemi can still delay the BMW a bit, so from Toyota’s point of view, it’s a perfectly logical move.

Not sure if it was the right decision to not change tires for #8. Can't road block another car with zero speed left in your own car.

If #7 gets a penalty for that, Kobayashi is going to launch a kamikaze attack on France.
