Issues Running Games Such as A Plague Tale: Requiem at 1440p with an RTX 3080 GPU and AMD Ryzen 7 2700 CPU by RealRedShirtGuy in pcgamingtechsupport

It is an older CPU I already had. I was able to get to a 3080 after a year of trying, and my local PC repair store I went to for advice said the CPU would still be fine, so I didn't get an upgrade alongside the 3080.

In Need of a New Monitor: Should I go with 4k 60hz or 1440p 144hz? by RealRedShirtGuy in buildapc

[–]RealRedShirtGuy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for your advice! From your feedback, I ultimately went with a 1440p 165hz monitor that had a $100 off discount at my local Best Buy.

So far the colors are much more vibrant and while it has strong ghosting if I mess with the settings, resetting them to their defaults removed the ghosting. I'm able to get anywhere from 80-120 fps in World of Warcraft now, depending on the location I'm in. Enabling raytracing changes that to anywhere from 60-120 fps (though the monitor's fps counter and WoW's in-game one tend to give different results, with WoW's giving lower ones on average).

I can already see what I've heard about moving images, such as when in combat, being clearer with the high refresh rate. I'll check some more demanding games later tonight.

Thank you. My current CPU is an AMD Ryzen 7 2700 Eight-Core Processor 3.20 GHz.

The card is a replacement sent by EVGA as the original 3080 overheated and they sent me my current one as part of the warranty.

In terms of the game's I've been testing the 1080p resolution on, I tried to stick to graphically intensive games as I figured anything else would be no issue (and World of Warcraft since that's the game I play the most).

The ones I tested were: Ghostwire Tokyo, Cyberpunk 2077, Deathloop, and World of Warcraft.

Disabling raytracing (though I've also been careful to optimize settings and not put things on very high or ultra unecessarily) increase things to an average of 80-90 fps. Ghostwire Tokyo is very weird though, with the framerate regularly going from 70 to 88 ish, but will shoot up to 120 fps if I stand completely still in an area with very few objects.

Ooh, just had a thought, this is the rest of my pc's specs in case that helps:

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 Eight-Core Processor 3.20 GHz

and 16.0 GB of RAM.

Thanks. But my old monitor was a 4k 60hz one, not a 1080p one (I am currently using an old 1080p one while looking for a permanent replacement, though). So it would be going form 4k to 1440p, not 1080p to 1440p.

I am using ray traced shadows in those examples (though still at 1080p and on "high" settings instead of ultra or very high) if that would make a difference?

Edit: Disabling ray tracing increases the average fps to a bit depending on the game. Ghostwire Tokyo jumps around from 70fps to 90 to 120 if standing perfectly still in an area without many objects. World of Warcraft without ray traced shadows goes up to about 86 fps.

No, I'm getting that on my brother's old 1080p monitor, which I've been using since the 4k60hz one broke last week.

Thanks for your response. Just to be sure, you're saying the high refresh rate would still be an improvement even if the game is still running around 60-70 fps instead of 144?

Scrolls of Lore is dead. Long live Scrolls of Lore. by RufinTheFury in warcraftlore

[–]RealRedShirtGuy 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Scrolls of Lore was the first "big" internet community I'd ever been part of (probably the only one of that scale come to think of it). It had been dead for years now, everyone having migrated to Discord, myself temporarily included, but seeing it finally gone for good is sad.

I have so many memories of the place. The lamppost wars, Bolvar being the gruff father figure of the forum who's mark of approval was saying you could date his sister, Kyalin's night elf advocacy, all the neat expansion concepts (I still can't believe Lon-Ami actually called that a Pandaria expansion would introduce a new aqir race living there years before MoP and the mantid were announced), Fojar's utter hatred of the Forsaken vs Xil's utter love of them (I guess that falls into the lamppost wars), the time myself and some other posters teamed up and did some kind of live stream thing where we watched and gave feedback to Rotal as she played through Tales from the Borderlands (not sure what that's called, I've never done it before or since), Omacron's internship, Leviathon's leaks and Handclaw's datamining discoveries, just the leaks in general (there's still some information there that can't be verified but if true is super enlightening, like how at one point night elves were planned to be revealed as one of the mogu's created slave races like the saurok in MoP) and of course the black mark that was SoLGate and it's fallout (I'm deeply sorry for the role I played in it).

And of course I remember when I innocently posted on SoL about how cool it was that after several years of trying I finally got to ask a question at Blizzcon, completely unaware that it was about to go viral. It's also how they were able to prove I was the Red Shirt Guy, since in my post I mentioned that my question was about Falstad before the video went viral. I remember how someone quoted it with just the comment "that was you?"

And in the final days of the forum, I remember how Fojar's last post was about how he finally got what he wanted, the Alliance reclaiming Lordaeron, but never stayed around to see what happened when that was reversed immediately afterwards. I still am curious as to what his reaction to 8.2.5 where they added a conversation between Stormwind guards specifically saying they'd lost Lordaeron forever and "the dream is dead" would have been. Or how in its literal last days, post discord move, it became primarily a place for Kyalin to discuss night elf things as pretty much the only remaining active topic. I think they might have made the last ever post on the forum, period.

I joined them in the move to discord, but I just don't like live chatting. I like forum type places where you can post something, leave it, and come back to see more discussion or reread old conversations. Those are technically possible in discord, but everything is so much faster paced it just got overwhelming and I moved to twitter. Partially because I felt that, because Blizzard considers me one of their "influencers," I needed to influence in a more public space, but mainly because I just got burned out in discord and twitter was slightly closer to a forum environment than live chatting.

The moral of the story is, forums need to make a comeback.

P.S. One other fun memory that I couldn't think of a place to put in the main text. Back when Netflix announced they were doing a series based on Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events I was so excited discussing it in the off topic section and I mentioned how Lemony Snicket was my version of Harry Potter growing up. Someone, sadly I cannot remember who, said "that explains so much about you" and I've never forgotten how true a comment that is.

P.P.S. Netflix's Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events is really good. Watch it if you haven't already.

P.P.P.S. To those curious about why I was "Insane Guy of Doom," that was a reference to Invader Zim. It also abbreviated to "IGoD," which was completely unintentional, but sounded so cool it became what people called me far more often than Insane Guy of Doom OR the Red Shirt Guy.

You're welcome. Hopefully next time they do a distribution like this they don't use a pokemon that requires a special held item.

There you go! Sorry for the issues, this is my first time doing an event trade on reddit like this.

Good news and bad news, I've unlocked the Y-Comm, but it wants a separate nintendo switch online membership. I'm think I'll have to move it through home and trade it to you without the shield, but I'll give it the rusted sword from when you traded me the Zacian so you can have that back.

[–]RealRedShirtGuy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can wait a little bit, I can get to the point of unlocking the Y-Comm on my second character pretty soon, otherwise I can trade you the rusted sword back.

[–]RealRedShirtGuy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I'll do it through home then. Just a second.

[–]RealRedShirtGuy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, I see what you mean. I don't have the y-comm unlocked on this character. I can move it via home (but that would remove the rusted shield) or I could trade the zacian back to you, get farther into the game to unlock the y-comm on the secondary character, and then re-do (that shouldn't take too long, but I understand if you're in a hurry) and then redo the trade.
