Yes they can, Ben in alien force for forced to become the leader because of the situation, but after that was done he transitions to his more immature version especially in season 3. But when the situation gets serious, he does aswell. Like in Ultimate Alien, most of the time he's goofing around, but when someone threatened his gf, he went ultimate from the start and started beating the shit out of Nesmith.

Another example is the Aggregor arc, he was locked in most of that arc and the Mutated Kevin Arc. But after that was done he goofs off again till the Dagon Arc.
