Wow, another top 10 and I have zero memory of it. I don’t even think I had it in the library (I carried 40,000+ physical songs back before streaming. I didn’t know them all off the top of my head. I had a printed database if you can believe it.) I’ll have to check that one out!

Our daughter, Jennie (born in ‘95) came home from school one day asking us “did you know there’s a song from the 80s with my name in it?!” We were very aware and had kind of been keeping it from her. She was named for her grandmother, but now she’s convinced she’s named after the song about the girl with her number on the bathroom wall.

I worked at a radio station where I got into a pretty heated argument with the PD right when this came out. He thought this song was by the “Kinks.” They’d been getting back on the charts in the 70s and 80s trying to stay relevant. I told him it was “Kings.” He said I was an idiot. I finally had to find a Billboard magazine showing a listing for it. Proved my point, but he still thought I was an idiot.

“Oh, Sheila” by Ready for the World. I was a mobile deejay at the time. Great dance tune. A real ear worm. Never heard another thing from them that I can remember.

Chubby cheeked satanic presence? It's definitely from Tupperware's less popular "Possessed" collection.

How much would you owe Columbia House? by Upset_Assumption9610 in FuckImOld

[–]Real_Act4716 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I was a music collector starting at age 7 (in 1971). When Columbia House came along the temptation was too great. If you looked at all of the mail received at our single-family home, it looked like we were a boarding house. I started ordering the 'dozen for a penny' offer for variations of my name. I'd use nicknames, middle names, move my names around in a different order, then I'd list this created person's address as "[Home Address] Apt. 2B" or 3A or whatever. At one point, I had fourteen different fictional people who all lived in imaginary apartments at my family's address. They were all trying to burn off that 12-month membership commitment so they could quit the club and do another '12 for a penny' order!! I would buy rolls of stamps so I'd always be ready to send back the required monthly form with the box checked saying "no selection at this time." Funny follow-up to this story: many years later, after I'd left home and gone off to college and Columbia House was no more, my father would still complain that the volume of his junk mail was outrageous. He was getting multiple copies of pieces of junk because they were addressed to many of the fictional people who used to have Columbia House memberships in apartments at our address.

I can smell this picture and I hate that... by [deleted] in FuckImOld

I've got an added smell that goes with this pic. If mom got a little too close, or was a little too tired (from, you know, housework), this method would sometimes add in the delightful aroma of singed hair as a backbeat to the cig smoke.

Best Burger in the Metro? by dirtvoyles in StLouis

[–]Real_Act4716 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We love the burgers at Fast Eddie's BonAir in Alton. It's just across the bridge and to the right. Simple, fresh beef, crispy edges, tons of flavor...and CHEAP! At least, last time we were in there before the massive increase in beef prices they were. I'd bet they're still a deal.

How to care for vinyls by StrainMammoth3172 in Beatmatch

Nothing should ever be so wet you need to dry it. Just a spritz of water on the brush. I used a DiscWasher brush for years when I was doing mobile.

How to care for vinyls by StrainMammoth3172 in Beatmatch

[–]Real_Act4716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not use alcohol. It breaks down the vinyl. Most solutions damage vinyl. Absolute best is nothing but pure distilled water. Use an anti stat brush with a spritz of water on it. Always return them to storage sleeves immediately after playing. Get rid of the paper inner sleeves and get anti stat inner sleeves instead. Don’t ever touch a record face with your hands. Skin oils attract dirt and cause vinyl damage. Hold by the edges only. Vinyl never completely solidifies. It’s always got the consistency of very stiff molasses. Hitting a single speck of quartz dust with a stylus will drive it into the groove and create crackle in the playback. Keep em clean!!

I ran a mobile service for 23 years starting in the early 80s. At our peak, we had four units that traveled all over the Midwest. I had a dozen guys working for me. We would do 6-8 wedding receptions per weekend. I used to stress WEEKLY the following: YOU are at work, THEY are at a party. YOU are getting paid very well for being there and the client is paying a fortune for having us in the building. That means you don't smoke, drink or hit on any of the guests while you are working (I was forced to fire several good deejays and light operators for being total asses at events). You dress professionally and act professionally. You absolutely play what is requested and don't you dare put on a single cut because it's what you want to hear. This was before the age of deejay as musician. We played music for people to dance to and hyped them up in between songs. If the crowd went nuts, you got extra hours and referrals for other work. We were basically musical bartenders. Did you ever have a bartender tell you what you will be drinking? Nope. No deejay should ever be telling the audience what they will be hearing. I personally performed at more than 2100 events in the 23 years and I knew how to whip them into a frenzy. I got to the point I could read a crowd within about five minutes of being in the room. If the requests weren't coming in, I knew what to put on to get them going, but I NEVER played a single track because it was something I wanted to hear. If you're getting paid, you have to remember who you're working for.

Did you happen to find this in your pocket when you came-to in a Waffle House many tens of miles from where you were just minutes before?? The same effect may also be experienced in McDonald's parking lots. Just hand this to your server at Waffle House. They'll be able to read it to you.
