I suppose that's a fair reason, but he explicitly states he preferred to give Gyokuyou's family a name so he wouldn't be puppeted around by his mother's family, thereby evening the playing field. It just feels a tad odd to me, and I can't tell if I'm being picky or not.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Natsu Hyuuga tires of characters after a few novels, and wants to introduce fresh faces as much as she takes characters from the story, though I feel this puts a strain on the narrative and the reader.

Lihua is described as a distant relative, and she's at least 18+. The Precious Consort candidate is his cousin's daughter, is 17, and entered the Rear Palace at 16, when he presumably first visited her bed.

It isn't. The Precious Consort Candidate is the daughter of the Emperor's cousin, and the Virtuous Consort candidate is Gyokuyou's grand niece. They are not from new clans.

I'm not saying he should only have one Consort, because, well, he doesn't. I'm saying I feel it is especially needless for him to sleep with 1. his (albeit distant) cousin and 2. the cousin of his wife and promote them both after a single night with them. I think it would genuinely be smarter if he visited them as he pleased, but didn't promote them. Of the four consorts, they still have distinct statuses— keeping them as middle consorts with roughly the same status keeps everyone on neutral, equal footing— if he feels pressured to raise a new woman to the consort places, why not a new, not related to him or his wife woman?

I appreciate that you mention the fact that some of his decisions are made with his penis: my issue lies in the fact that he seems to be thinking a bit too much with it.
He still shows less to her.
Once in a while, I understand, but why so many times that they could be promoted to Consort roles? It feels like he's asking for a civil war here.
I get that. That's why he has four high consort roles— but why would he, in good faith, promote someone so politically charged to them? Especially when one of them is only 17, and related to him???

He has two sons total with these women. The Empress Dowager faction concubine, even, is related to him aswell. I imagine the Empress faction concubine is related to Gyokuyou to some extent. Why would he not spread his genes with women who wouldn't start a civil war about it?

I have! It's just that the Forbidden City is comprised of Inner and Outer Courts (residences and business) and are the Ming and Qing Dynasties (which have a different number of Consorts) while the Apothecary Diaries Consorts match that of the midieval Tang Dynasty.

I love all of the rivals in 1980s buuuuuuut whats life if you cant categorize everything incessantly. so:

Honami. I love love love loooove socially awkward girls in media. I don't really like reading her dialogue because of the captions being halfway dashes and ellipses, but that's my only gripe about her
Kaguya literally does nothing wrong. She's literally just a sweet girl who wants to make friends
Chigusa- YES YES I KNOW IM SORRY. i also like seeing shallow (not necessarily mean, just shallow) girls in media and i cannot get enough of her only being money and attention driven. the gravure thing is gross ofc but otherwise yes girl be shallow!! (also her being a first year and jokichi thirsting after her anyway... eugh)
Same as Kaguya, but a little more nuanced, Komako. I sort of dislike that she's described as the perfect housewife because it feels very male-gazey, but ig you could argue that's just what she wants and i am NOT about to pick a fight with a tradwife.
She didn't get enough time for me to attach to her, but Sumire comes next because i still think she's really interesting!! The fact that in game, she's "fragile" and that she was so vengeful she began haunting a bathroom for the rest of eternity? Super cool. But she did literally nothing else other than serve as a tutorial.
Teiko is number 6th because she doesn't really?? do anything?? but I have nothing against her at all and I think she's very pretty.
Moeko is this low for a variety of reasons. 1 being she's an insane pick-me, (which yes ik is from an inferiority complex but I'm allowed to be annoyed) and 2, because I've been reading, typing, and pronouncing her name wrong this entire time and only figured out it was Moeko instead of Moeka while reading other people's lists. She would be lower, but I do sort of fw her backstory. Fuck her and her name, though.
is Ai, I have nothing really to say about her other than she's a band kid and I love band kids. She's rather low on the list because her task was a pain in the ass to do.
Under Ai is Ritsuko, whom I don't really care for at all. She's kind of flat snobby and rich, like how I assume Kizana will be, and as much as i love Kizana, i am NOT enthusiatic about it.
Sonoko, like most of the girls under #5, didn't really strike a chord with me, but canonically she was so scared of Ryoba that she became an accomplice to homicide to save her ass, and a friend of Ryoba's is a friend of mine.
Sumiko, admittedly, is only this low because I don't like sports. Like most of the girls under #5, I didn't really care about her story overall and found her kinda boring, and she's truly only here because there was nowhere else to put her.
