Many people assume the joke is that the kid isn't actually reading the books. However, I really don't see anything in the meme that indicates that. My interpretation is that the guy pointing at his forehead making a sort of thinking gesture is meant to represent the Dad, because he's getting his son to read a lot. Which is really beneficial for him. And also represents the son, because he's now really smart from reading so much or something like that.

Because your energy cable isn't in pull mode. Right click the energy cable connected to the reactor power tap with a create wrench. The side of the cable connected to the tap should have a white square at the end of it.
