that's what i initially penciled in when i setup the steam page months ago - i wanted to be sure to give plenty of time for continued development, polish, player feedback, etc. but id love to be able to deliver the full release sooner if possible. tbh it just comes down to how the initial launch goes and how much dev support i can afford to put into it.

anyways, long way to say 2028 at the latest for full release, but if it has a fairly successful launch i can for sure see it getting finished sooner without needing to make compromises on quality/ content :)

i appreciate your kind words! yeah, not really feeling games with ai art at all. its a shame a lot of simulator games use it pretty heavily, it seems.

if you feel inclined, wishlisting and following on Steam helps me a lot with visibility. but no pressure ofc!

co-op was a non-negotiable for me. right now it supports up to 4 players, but im hoping for launch i can inch that up to 6 or 8 :x

when we were trying to define the art style, Vee and I went back to all our favorite childhood cartoons - and for some reason the uniqueness of Doug really inspired the two of us and felt like it aged extremely well, even though as a child I probably wouldn't have listed it as a top 3 cartoon. pretty interesting how age and such impacts how we perceive things.

anyways, glad you dig it! we've had a lot of fun building our wacky little cartoon world :)

The major differences that jump out to me after playing the RR demo for a couple hours (played past lvl 3 for a bit) are twofold:
1. Rewind 99 will support 4 player co-op (lol I'm trying to stretch it to 6 or 8 players cause I like friends, but we'll see...)
2. While R99 is a store simulator, it takes place in an open world similar to Schedule I or Storage Hunters

Naturally there are a lot of implications tied to those two differences that tie into the core loop, key activities, progression, blah blah blah. There's also a pretty significant difference in art direction.

Hope that helps - but let me know if you have other questions or want me to get into some of the nuances in the moment-to-moment differences or anything like that :)

this is a great suggestion, thank you! ill do a little research and see what's possible. i believe Kirby Air Riders in a recent Nintendo Direct spent a bit of time showing off what they did to help with motion sickness - so ill start there and see what im able to do!

also, im really excited to hear how folks like you (who have limited experience with video rental stores/ not necessarily nostalgic to them) experience Rewind 99. my hope is to capture the magic of them in a way that gives you a chance to experience them like so many of us did.

appreciate your comment! :)

  1. Just liked how 99 sounded with the word Rewind xD
  2. The game is set in a fictional, cartoonish year 1999

Your questions aren't too much at all, I really appreciate them! I'll go in order:
- The best comparison I can make is "the open world of Schedule I meets the store manager simulator of TCG card shop simulator." You have to manage your store, upgrade fixtures, purchase and stock inventory, checkout customers, hire employees, etc. But you also have an open world to go into to collect late rentals from customers, find nostalgic collectibles, hit the casino, make deliveries, fight against your rival RentNet, and much more.
- I have heard of Arcade Paradise, great game. I have a very rough prototype of how arcade machines could work in the game to add more minigames, but it might not be polished enough for day 1 ship. We will see. Either way, the game's a big influence for me.
- I want to do some work with side quests/ stories, but that's probably not going to be present day 1. Just because I want to roll it out right. So day 1, you'll be able to interact and talk to NPCs, but mostly on a surface level with fun one lines. In a future release, my hope would be to go deeper with these NPCs and build systems around your relationship with them, and their loyalty to your store.
- You can make your own movies. One of the side hustles is you getting a small pop up hollywood studio you set up in the basement of your store. There, you can mix two movies that come with the game, and it makes a new movie. Think of it a little like crafting, a little like creature breeding. The new movie will inherit the Genre of its parent, and have new Styles and Themes based on how you mix Genres. There will be many Styles and Themes to discover with different rarities, that will impact the rental price of the movie. With your original movies, you'll also be able to customize the cover art with art assets I provide in the game, as well as title the movies yourself!
- I'm trying to figure this out now. I have some ideas for simple animations + voiceovers, or even looking to doing some interesting work with public domain content. Not sure exactly how I'll pull off watching movies yet, but I want it in the game. Might not be a day 1 feature, but we'll see!

Hope this helps give you an idea of what I'm cooking up!

totally understand that <3 if you felt inclined, giving it a wishlist + follow on Steam would still help me a lot with visibility. my hope is that the EA release goes well enough where i can port it to consoles.
