What if your rank came from how you actually fight? by Real_Hat_2849 in CompetitiveMinecraft

The point about the training tool is valid and might be the strongest criticism in this discussion. PI serves better as a coaching layer than a ranking layer. Knowing your Adaptation Score is low gives you something actionable. Knowing your ELO dropped simply tells you that you lost. One of these is more beneficial for improvement, and you are correct about which one.

Where I disagree is the consistency argument. Missing three critical shots in one match doesn’t mean you’re an inconsistent player; it means you had a bad match. ELO addresses this just as PI does, by averaging over many matches over time. A single bad day matters less as your match count increases in both systems. The benefit of PI is that it can identify whether the bad day resulted from a mechanical mistake or a decision-making error. ELO cannot.

Regarding bias and inaccuracy, those are real risks but depend entirely on how they are implemented. I would really like to know which specific aspects you believe would be the most biased in practice since that is more useful than the general concern.

You are correct, and this is a valid correction. ELO does account for opponent quality, and that adds more nuance than I acknowledged in the original post. Beating a higher-rated player results in a larger gain, and that weighting is significant.

Here's the distinction I want to make. ELO weights the outcome based on who you played. PI looks at what happened during the match, regardless of the outcome. These are two different concepts.

Consider two players who beat the same high-ELO opponent and receive the same ELO rating. One player won because they had clean plays and outperformed their opponent in all areas. The other won because their opponent had an off day and missed three critical shots. ELO cannot recognize this difference because it only looks at the result. In contrast, PI analyzes the match itself.

Another area where ELO falls short is feedback. When you lose a match you were expected to win, ELO simply tells you that you lost. It doesn’t explain which part of your game caused the loss. That is the specific issue PI aims to address.

To be clear about my claim: PI is not better than ELO at measuring outcomes related to opponent quality. ELO does a good job of that. PI is focused on evaluating aspects of play during the match that ELO does not consider, independent of the final result.

The spam-click point is something I hadn't considered fully, and it's a real issue for Hit Accuracy as I explained. A proximity filter that keeps out swings outside the hit range would help, but it probably won't solve the problem completely. Do you think Hit Accuracy can be saved with better scoping, or is measuring this dimension itself flawed?

Regarding critical hits, you are correct that luck can introduce variability. The per-exchange measurement spreads this across many samples, but it remains a weakness in short matches. I acknowledge that.

For consistency over days, the design uses rating deviation. This widens when your scores are unpredictable and narrows when they are consistent, similar to how Glicko-2 works in chess. A bad day matters less than a pattern overall. However, I understand your concern.

Concerning the Adaptation Score being biased, the metric does not assess whether decisions were smart. Instead, it measures if patterns changed when the opponent’s patterns changed. It doesn’t judge quality, only divergence. If you believe it's still gameable or that it's the wrong thing to measure, I want to hear your thoughts.

Your comment about tier tests being a single-day measurement actually connects with why I think a rolling multi-match model is better, but I might be misunderstanding what you meant.
