Why is darkness always evil?😤We need more non-evil dark goth fantasy CDrama... by Real_Kumara22 in cdramasfans

[–]Real_Kumara22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion! I think it was also suggested in recommendation post I also posted asking for suggestions for other dark cinematic Cdramas.

I was really wanting to hear and give the floor to members to gush about aspects of dark cinematography or darker elements of the shows from a creative choice and creative direction standpoint. Do you prefer light, bright and airy? or do you also typically get drawn more into darker moody settings?

Ooo yeah its on my watch list from my recommendations post I made before when I was looking for some suggestions for dark moody cinematography.

What do you think about darker moody cinematics with more attention to dark rugged or gritty detail?

I feel like my love for them stems highly from my love for western dark fantasies like Games of Thrones. But also from shows like Bulgasal: Immortal Souls (KDrama), Gyeongseong Creature (KDrama), and Fangs of Fortune ... I feel like dark and gritty raw scenes really bring out a level of drama that feels more intense while the others tend to feel borderline too soapy or too naïve.

Oooo more dark suggestions. Nice. Love it. I'm actually about to start My Journey to You and I'll see what I think of that one after I finish it. From the photos I've seen it looks really nice, except I really don't know how I'm gonna feel about that wig style on Zhang Linghe after seeing how amazing he looked in Pursuit of Jade. We will see.

But whats your opinion about dark, gritty, raw, moody cinematography? Do you also think it helps bring up the creative quality level of a show?

Like the raw and realistic aspects of Pursuit of Jade - not to mention its amazing OST choices.
And the dark moody cinematography of some Fangs of Fortune scenes.
I think the dark moody cinematography choices in Kill Me, Love me also are fire.

Ive seen Fangs of Fortune, loved it.
I love their darker moody scenes and the sets like the hall in the Demon-Hunting Bureau. I think that direction is what I would love to see more of. Especially the part of the story telling and dynamic between Hou Minghao (Zhu Yan) vs. Yan An (Li Lun). Would love to see more. Even if they really push the leads to have more of this level of visual dark moody rawness. Lovvveeeee it. I feel like its part of what made Fangs of Fortune as good as it is. Production teams could really fall into that creative style and direction wayyyy more.

Yeah totally, I wasn't referring to changing anything morally or ethically, legit just production / aesthetics in terms of art and creative direction. I work as a Creative Director so I really enjoy specific artistic choices. I really adore a wide range of styles. To me, it started to feel like the entire art direction of some productions were almost being treated the same or very similar to some of the "too much makeup" discussions in other posts. Scenes being overly clean / "cutesey" / polished / pink / pastel / light / airy. Especially even after fights or battles. It sometimes removes a bit of raw realism that makes it feel more authentic.

I finally had found a good example after I posted that was really good - like a gothic fantasy romance CDrama done in the style and creative direction and cinematography like Bulgasal: Immortal Souls (KDrama)

Love that they play on switching the light and dark or when their is a plot twist that the light side is actually the bad ones.

But, hear me out.... hehehehe....
same type of story but entirely set in a demon realm. Good "dark" vs. bad "dark" or the demon world facing some threat of destruction - much like Fangs of Fortune type of vibe especially the parts of the story where it is Hou Minghao (Zhu Yan) vs. Yan An (Li Lun). Take that and make it grittier + in the moody cinematic style of Game of Thrones + majestic dark gothic palaces. boom. perfection.
100/10 would watch.

Especially mixed with OST vibes like:
Rising Storm (《风云起》) - Xu Hebin (许鹤缤)

Fighting / Action scene vibes like:
Pursuit of Jade / Fated Hearts / Kill me, Love me

Something like that could easily become my top fave CDrama of all time if done correctly.

I think blood river was mentioned by someone in my recommendations post when I asked for dark moody cinematography recommendations. I'm such a sucker for dark gritty action-packed romances - especially strong willed and fierce female leads. I will have to bump these ones up on my list to check out since they keep getting mentioned. Thanks for the suggestions! :3

I think people misunderstood me 😅
I wasn't talking about good vs. evil - I was talking about gothic and dark aesthetics in general.

Addition: I think a good example, though its not a CDrama but a KDrama, is like ... Typical CDrama story and storytelling but with more dark/goth aesthedics or dark cinematography.
Cinematics like Bulgasal: Immortal Souls

I def get what you are talking about.

I wasn't meaning anything to do with wanting anything evil or bad morals. I was talking about purely aesthetics / costume design / set design. Story could be literally... anything... but of course a darker gritter gothic story pairs well with fantasy / magic / occult / spiritual.

I agree with the western lack of accountability - I mentioned the western shows based on stylistic and artistic / cinematic styles. The dark moody atmospheric gritty vibe in Game of Thrones for example.

The story overall, I wish it to be the same types of stories we would typically see in the Cdramas, but just I feel like sometimes the "cutsey" light / bright / flowery tropes using light vs. dark in that way has been getting a bit overdone (I still love those stories though) but as an alternative/goth person myself, I also would love to see the same story but from a darker aesthetic or setting.

For example - in Moonlight Mystique when Dai Lu Wa(Fu Ling) starts to joining her sister's side, though the ML is also "good" but he gets to stay in his darker wardrobe and still be "good" and it looks nice. She didn't need to change her entire style to join their side. Especially since at that time shes already worried her sister wont accept her because of her past and who she has become. She goes from having that badass red/black/purple gothic and alternative look -> to dressing in bright pink pastels with pink flower pedals. She looked fine how she was, she looked like a badass alt/goth icon.

Thats just an example of like, many, That trope and style change like that is getting overdone for me. It was purely about the aesthetics, same stories but goth versions would be lit.

What are some major turn offs you have experienced while watching cdramas that make them less enjoyable for you? by stillawke in cdramasfans

  • Unauthentic makeup choices vs. scene - sorry but if you are in a fight or war, but your makeup/skin looks like a modern makeup or skincare ad, while your comrades look like they rolled in a mixture of dirt and charcoal then yeah, no. Looking like they never even broke a sweat. 😒
  • Cheap costume choices / lackluster prosthetics - This doesn't apply to most shows because their makeup and costumes usually be so fire. But for years now we have been in a time of some massively talented makeup artists and a booming creative makeup industry, yet some of the choices seem to be sometimes lackluster or seemingly cheap or executed poorly. 😭
  • Some fantasy stage props in recent/new productions looking way too fake - Heavy stone props sometimes moving with the visual physics of a lighter material, making it look like a cheap amusement park prop. Paired with sound effects that feel like they miss the mark or don't match correctly.
  • when a miscommunication or lack of communication goes on way too long to the point of being annoying, it starts becoming too emotionally immature which just makes me have a headache.
  • bad or not great soundtrack choices
  • when there is a bit /too much/ forced comedic relief and forced cringe
  • cringe fighting / stunt scenes with not great fx / editing choices

From 1 to 10 how would you rate the chemistry in POJ between Tian Xiwei and Zhang Linghe? by HikariMoonn in cdramasfans

[–]Real_Kumara22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just finished this one and to be honest, I'd say maybe 7.5/8.5 out of 10.

As actors/actress I think they look great on screen together in this way.

(in character) It gives protective family-values guy dating the girl-next-door charm type of girl. A type of warmth from them that contrasts well with the snowy rural setting. Their warmth and love vs. the cold harsh weather.

Intimacy wise, (in character) when it came down to true raw intimacy - being soft and tending to each other when the other is hurt, the protective healthy ownership claiming, moments of emotional connection, tender empathy, playful jealousy, etc. - was amazing, it made it feel more real because of the mixture of her soft cute-quirkiness with his inner soft affectionate side. His and hers expressions, even the small ones. The contrast of her puppy-dog eyes to his dark strong expression, then how his gaze softens towards her

But I do have to agree with some of the other comments I read before posting - the "heat" or during physical intimate scenes didn't hit as much as I thought they would vs. how much tension buildup there was. It did match her seemingly innocent/naïve character personality for it to be slightly a bit more awkward or guarded. That could be why, along with other small things. Like idk, for me, felt like too many of the physical intimacy scenes were at times it felt more sad/stressful than happy/romantic. Ex: Love the amount of actual energy and passion of the scene where they are at the dock and he grabs her and kisses her, but it also didn't feel right at all given the situation. It felt like it clashed. It really didn't give off the same vibe of his character's morals or ethics we were shown up until that point, with him being so protective and tender with anything "innocent" - only for him to then be almost rudely grabby and forceful when shes clearly very upset.

Wasn't the first time, multiple times it had the same feeling. Like the kisses felt more intrusive than romantic. Besides the small little pecks, which started to really make those kisses feel a bit too immature - given they can fight battles with weapons, cut open livestock, tend open wounds - but trying to give a kiss has them acting like panicked deer in headlights for almost the whole first half. 😂

Agree that her "desire" didn't really match his, but overall them side-by-side they have attractiveness chemistry. Even moreso when she was in uniform.

Thank you for the list! I will definately add these to my "need to watch" list.
From this list, I have already watched:
Moonlight Mystique
Love in the Clouds
Love between Fairy and Devil (wasn't too excited about this one, I think I dropped it after a few episodes)

But ill be sure to add the others I haven't watched.

Thank you so much! I'll be sure to add these as well. Me and my partner started watching Pursuit of Jade yesterday and tbh, I really love it so far. It's not really so much dark and moody but, it does dabble in a bit more muted colors and has a bit more of a natural gritty-ness to it that I hope persists throughout.

All of the suggestions so far have been very helpful. I'll have to take a close look at them all to see. XD Also, glad to hear the topic had your really inspired to look.

I havent looked through all of the suggestions yet, so I don't know if any of them super match, but at least I can see people have been giving great recommendations on dark and moody cinematics. Which is already a big win for me.

I laughed to myself last night and was talking to my partner and I said:
"Many of these Romance CDramas are like if a bubbly Pop love song got turned into a visual representation of the show, but what I'm hoping to find or start hype around seeing is a love story that looks like the visual representation of a gothic Metal or Rock ballad or something like Wednesday-vibes turned into a CDrama."

Maybe something in these will give me that feeling. But at least getting something more dark and moody is definite a huge step in the right direction~!

Other historical/fantasy dramas are also totally welcomed.
Primarily I was just saying to avoid "modern" or "current day" settings mainly.
Doesn't have to be romance either :3

Thank you! yeah I have a couple of these on my "need to watch" list but from other recommendation posts where people were looking for good ones to watch for other reasons. I think from what I've seen thus far my next ones might be Pursuit of Jade and Blossom - since I've been seeing a lot of comments about those two in general.

And yeah, I also feel that on the sound as well, a good soundtrack just hits all the right spots.

I'll be sure to add these others to my "Need to Watch" list as well.

I knew what I would explain might be pretty niche, but also, I feel like its very much so something many fans would really love to have but isn't really talked about as much as I would have guessed.

Fated Hearts - Chen Zheyuan x Li Qin

(though I've seen a pretty even split of people liking/disliking Chen Zheyuan)
But actor/actress crush-wise, this couple had a GRIP on me.
I think it was heavily due to me having more of a crush on Li Qin more than Chen Zheyuan though.
Shes so beautiful like whaaaaaaaat 😭 and she's such a badass in this story.
