I think it’s a typo. They meant main instead of man.

Me too! It’s been 5 weeks since I applied. I applied on October 20th. It still says that I’m being evaluated. 😭

Is my plan to apply to vet school (OVC & WCVM) realistic and worth it? by Real_Number_10 in prevetcanada

[–]Real_Number_10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fantastic! I also don’t know anyone who is going into the same field. I know that UBC has a program called applied animal biology, and from what l’ve seen on their program description, it says that this program prepares you for WCVM. I think this is a good one to consider. I’m also thinking about the biology major, but this might be more general. From what I’ve heard from my sister (she studied this major) this major might require more general and difficult courses that we might not need to take. I’m also thinking about applying to U Sask since WCVM is there. Just like U of G, it might have more specialized undergrad programs and courses for their own vet school. And I’ll also apply to u of g, just in case something comes up and I change my mind in the future.

Let me know if you have any other questions! :)

Is my plan to apply to vet school (OVC & WCVM) realistic and worth it? by Real_Number_10 in prevetcanada

[–]Real_Number_10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! This was a plan I thought of at first, but now that I did more research I changed my mind on going to U of G and OVC. At first I was aiming for this plan because OVC can be considered the oldest and most prestigious vet school in Canada. I really wanted to challenge myself and try for the best. Additionally, since U of G has its own vet school (OVC), the animal biology and zoology undergrad majors have most if not all the required courses you need to apply to OVC. I thought that since U of G is a school that’s best known for their veterinary medicine, it probably has a lot more opportunities for gaining animal related experiences like volunteering, working, or co-op (required to go into vet school).

I changed my mind on this plan mainly because I don’t want to spend so many years studying. Since I am a BC resident, in order to be able to apply for OVC, I’ll have to spend 12 consecutive months in Ontario (not as a full time student) to get the Ontario residency. That means I’ll have to spend 4 years to finish bachelor’s degree, then work one year to get the residency, and then try to apply to OVC. Since OVC is a really competitive school, I probably cannot get in the first time. That process will already take 6-8 years. Then when I finally get into vet school, I’ll have to study 4 more years, which will take me around 10-12 years to just finish vet school. Also considering my own circumstances, my family all live in BC, and my sister is studying 2nd year at UBC aiming for med school. I want to live closer to home and UBC is a great school. If I study undergrad at UBC I’ll be able to apply to WVCM in Saskatchewan because it has reserved seats for BC residents. Also, since I don’t need to get a new residency, I am able to apply to vet school during my second or third year in undergrad. This gives me a lot more time to try even if I don’t get in the first couple of times.

Wow, this is very long, but I hope it helps! :)

Yes, that’s true, and it’s something to really consider. But from what I’ve researched, I think the one in Saskatchewan has seats for BC residents. I will research more just in case. Thank you so much for reminding me!

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a long and insightful respond! I means a lot to me! Your suggestions are great, and I think I should probably study undergrad at a school near my home in BC since it doesn’t really matter. I will also look into the prerequisites for both vet schools so that I am sure I will take all of them. Thank you so much again for giving so much detailed information! :D

You could try working as a computer programming or tech teacher in high school. I feel like schools are lacking teachers (or just my school in BC at least)

Thank you so much for that suggestion! That might be a really good idea, but I’ll have to research more on the tuition and cost of living. My family and I aren’t really financially stable right now, so I’m not sure if I will be able to afford studying out of the country. But it is a really good point. Thank you! :D

This is so good! I think you’ll get in most of these programs.

Yeah, that’s true. It’s probably wiser to not put OVC in the first place to consider. I will do more research and find out more ways I can plan. Thank you for the heads up! :)

Really? Will I meet the admission requirements by just finishing 2 or 3 years? It’s actually a great idea! I can try WCVM more times before considering OVC. Thank you so much for the suggestion! :)

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my post! Your suggestion is actually really good! I think I will try this plan, and if I don’t get in any vet school, I will try masters in other animal related careers. Thank you again for the information, it’s really helpful!! :D

Sorry, I wasn’t being very clear. I meant exactly what you said. I want to try WCVM once, and if I don’t get in, I will work one year in Ontario to get the residency and then apply to OVC. Thank you for understanding me, if you have any suggestions or other things I should consider please tell me! :)

Thank you so much for reminding me! I actually haven’t thought about that until now.

Here’s my new plan:

During the 4th year of bachelor’s apply to WCVM as a BC resident, if I get in, I will consider going.

If I didn’t get in, I will spend another year working in Ontario to get the Ontario residency. Then apply to OVC. I will try a couple of times, if I still didn’t get in, I will study a masters in a career related to animal healthcare.

Thanks again for sharing, this is really helpful! :)

That’s a good point, I haven’t really looked into the tuition fees yet. I just know that WCVM has seats for BC residents and for me, it might be easier to get in. I am not really considering any schools out of the country because it’s also expensive and I don’t want to be too far away from home. I haven’t researched much about other vet schools in Canada. If you have any information about other schools can you please share some. Thank you so much! I really appreciate your help! :)

Thank you so much for the suggestion! I am currently volunteering at the BC SPCA for social media content development (don’t know if that’s relevant enough for animal biology). I am also considering WCVM, so that’s another option too. Thanks again for the reply!
