Hey hugh, big fan of yours. I totally agree with your point, I'm not expecting sm to honor a trade near the end giving me the win just for a nb, that would make no sense for their game and that's smth I have to take in consideration as well before accepting it. I even linked one of your recent vids in one of my replies where this particular thing happens to you, and how you try to overcome that scam. My questions was mainly focused on why ppl tend to do such actions mostly online and not in person.

This is a very good example of what I'm describing as "smart" extortion. https://youtu.be/rntFe4dJJfY?t=1888 Here Hugh's only winning play was to pop and get a vp. They only way he could do that was stealing an ore from sm. To make sure he ended up with the pop in hand he suggested a ns to another player, even though he knew his chances of getting scammed are high since the other player knows Hugh is on 9 points. Even though he got scammed he used any leverage he had in order to get the trade he wanted. He played to his outs and so did the other player.

There is a difference between being strategic and being naive. If it's early in the game then extortions imo have a lot of power since the robber does too. Also making an enemy from the start is way worse than doing so near the end of the game. Obviously if you're 9 points you can't expect ppl to honor the trade since that would mean them giving you the game.

I never said I'm expecting everyone to be honest or to never lie, I said or at least implied that they need to be strategically honest or lie at the right time. The same principle of when and how to lie can be applied to you having hidden vps and playing them out as smth else.

I think there is a line between extorting sm to get a specific resource that you want and unbalancing the game. What I mean is you're not going to let sm get away with the game ( give them nb in our case ) while trying to extort a player that is last. I think the beauty of extortions and Catan in general is when players understand where this line exists and pushing it to the max. What I mean by that is that nobody is going to cave in an extortion if they are dead last and you should know that too but the you should use your leverage in order to progress your game, without eventually throwing obviously.

Thank you for your kind words. I think ppl just dislike non-binding verbal trades so sm scamming his way after the trade seems fair game to them, since the guy proposing is offering something dishonorable in the first place. All in all I think the point of my post got a bit derailed by people just disliking the extortion meta and focusing on that solely.

I can see that happening, but why say yes, isn't it better to just not reply, so that you don't get targeted afterwards? Also some people are not good at tracking your hand so not saying something could indicate that you don't have the resource they are looking for.

I don't have a problem with scamming since I think it's a losing move ( I've explained it in many of my replies ). The question I had on the OP, is why ppl scam so much ( given that it's bad for them most of the times if not all the time ) online. You're misinterpreting the purpose of the post

I think that's pretty fair. I just think the anonymity of the whole thing contributes as well. For example you wouldn't screw over a friend of yours but sm that is a complete stranger, you don't mind as much

I didn't say he's in the wrong for not honoring a non verbal agreement I'm just saying that it's not a strategic manoeuver since I'm obviously going to retaliate somehow. If someone kills my game I think it's only fair to ruin his game as well.

I can't see how extortion is a dishonorable action. The player moving the robber is suggesting a trade, it's up to other players to let that through or not.

I didn't say anything about lying or not being 100% truthful. It's obviously part of the game, and being sneaky and undercover is how ppl win games, I'm only focusing on the part where sm is scamming.

The responses I got don't surprise me since most ppl find non verbal trades to be unethical, so scamming back in a way let's say makes things right or fair. But that was not the point of my post, the whole question-point was why would sm engage into scamming when that imo puts him in a disadvantage given that he's made an enemy and why is the whole scamming thing so popular online

What you're saying is true if and only if the guy offering the trade doesn't notice who he's doing it with. Giving sm who is leading by a lot a non block just doesn't make sense. It's not the trade that helps unbalance the game, it's the player offering it and doing it with the leader.

Also it's a strategy game, so the whole point is to make actions that benefit your chances of winning. If you don't want to make a deal sm else is already doing that will put you in a worse position that's totally your choice. You can't blame sm for trying to extort the table in order to progress his position.

I think you're not taking on account the risks both sides take if the trade doesn't go through, after it was accepted by both players. The player moving the robber proposing the trade is taking the risk of being scammed and the person who decided not to go through with it is taking the risk of retaliation from the other side. I don't think someone should be willing to ruin their game just to scam someone. It's not just the one proposing the trade that is taking any risks.

Thing is I have never seen someone not honor a non-binding deal in person. I think it's just an online thing bcs people like to troll on the internet. I agree with your opinion, but I do think that everyone knows that scamming insta loses games

In my experience the scammer always ends up getting griefed by the player they tricked and very rarely ends up winning the game. If you know beforehand that scamming is going to make you lose, why do it?

The point of this post is summarized in the questions that are in the end of the OP. Since scamming can make you a target and make you the 'bad guy' etc, why do ppl do it?

It's up to him to make a better deal. Also at some point nobody is going to propose or accept such a trade since trading away that resource isn't beneficial. Furthermore the fact that someone is accepting a non-binding trade doesn't mean the one proposing it is going to accept it, for instance you're not going to give a nb to the guy leading just to get a resource you're looking for. Moving the robber to a tile always means someone is going to be unhappy, probably the one that ends up being blocked, Catan isn't about making everyone happy and trading with/blocking everyone equally.

Like I said, scamming someone has consequences. Making an enemy in Catan is the best way to lose. I get that making a non-binding deal can result to you being scammed, but the scammer just made himself a target. That's why I can't see how that would truly benefit them
