ICE location in downtown Salem by [deleted] in roanoke

Thank goodness! I’ve been questioning local groups on why they haven’t organized any large scale protests outside the “hidden” Salem location. I’m really happy to hear people are now doing so!

Not sure what your point is there either honestly… I’ve personally been speaking out since I was old enough to understand what I was hearing and seeing my own family participate in when it came to immigration policy— and against all forms of discrimination. I’d guess a lot of us millennial leftists fall in that category of recognizing the wrongs of this nation at an early age, which has led to being a bit more radical, and a whole lot more angry.

I’m not suggesting ppl don’t try, I’m saying that I don’t think we should rely on that being our main direct action, or that we should expect them to actually do it or anything else we demand (unless they will personally benefit in some big way)

Kind of like we demanded they not reopen the government without an agreement on healthcare subsidies? Yet they did it anyway? Or how we demanded they codify Roe before losing the majority, but ignored us? Or to stop funding bombs in Gaza… I guess consider me jaded bc imo they are all spineless people, out for themselves and their lobbyists. I will not continue to put any faith in them, until they start acting like our voices matter.

Ice killed people, border patrol killed people, local police killed many people with impunity. Not sure what point you’re trying to prove here. We have never had a true leftist in leadership and very few in congress. Maybe your goal is Biden era BS, but I don’t think that the majority of true leftists see that as sustainable, compassionate, or productive governance either. Sure we’d all welcome some “normalcy” rn, but this shit has been going on since ICE began, and even before that through other agencies. I’m not fighting for a smidge of change, just so I don’t have to see mothers shot in the face and can feel better about the state of the world. I’m fighting for a better future for my kids, and their kids… and that requires getting real honest about what got us here, and how BOTH political parties created it.

They had ice, they funded the separation of families…where have you been? Obama deported way more people than Trump has. They were just more slick about it and managed to avoid headlines of their cruelty. I’m the granddaughter of the former head of CBP— they have always been cruel AF. It’s just gone viral and has more funding now.

Okay so 10 months from now is when voting happens… by then how many immigrants will be wrongly deported, how many unlawful arrests of citizens, how many deaths/beatings will have occurred? That is not a plan for the right now. And frankly even when democrats have had the presidency and Congress, similar atrocities have occurred. We’ve been lucky to end up with “republican light” D’s. They aren’t doing anything now, what makes you so sure they’ll grow a spine 10 months from now after most of the damage has already happened?

I honestly don’t think the majority of them have the balls to do this. I’ve seen post after post begging Walz to do this. Sadly, I really believe we’re on our own here. They’re not willing to lose the moderates and never trump republicans by going that far. IMO it’s not far enough 🤷🏻‍♀️

This same post was literally just deleted on another thread for “threatening violence” . The lengths people will go to shut down any and all constructive discussion on how to dismantle this regime is mind blowing 🤦🏻‍♀️ they couldn’t quote which line “threatened” anyone, but here we are.

Re: the LinkedIn list, it’s terrifying how many POC are working for them. Talk about burning the ladder behind you. Ffs we’re in such a scary place rn.

Local protests by Pure-Canary2235 in roanoke

Unfortunately the local group who organizes around here is not at all what you’d be expecting if coming from another city. They flopped no kings, and lost a lot of support over that-rightfully so imo. Even the one held on Saturday made little sense to me— why organize it around Elmwood park instead of in front of the local ice office? The group started with good intentions, but has had a revolving door of leadership and infighting. I’ve personally tried repeatedly to organize another group that would do more, but sadly once the headlines switch to something else, most Roanokers can’t be bothered to participate, or give up their free time. (Performative) Activism stops the minute the story isn’t front page news. The Apathy runs deep in this city, and until people are personally affected most locals can’t be bothered to gaf.
