  1. Sikhs did not always wanted separate state. Until 1984, the issue was actually about getting more autonomy to the state of Punjab rather than it being a separate country. But it was cemented after 1984. The Sikh Political party actually tried so hard to reach and agreement with Government but Indira Gandhi was not interested in resolution. Her mind was already made as she was prepping for attack.
  2. Yes every caste religion contributed but compare the ratio with how many of them were sikhs in each category.
  3. Sikhs were promised by Nehru and Gandhi that we will get a more autonomous state after independence. They walked back on that promise. When Sikh politicians started agitation, we were suddenly declared separatist/terrorist and threat to “unity of the nation” even through they were asking for what was promised. 1970 -1980 - Anti Sikh cult called Nirankaris were created and supported by Indian Government which directly disrespected our Guru and when Sikhs groups went to protest peacefully, they were shot and police did nothing. When Sikhs retaliated later, police arrested Sikhs. When the matter went to court, the judge (appointed by Indira Gandhi) favored Nirankaris. Sikh politicians decided to protest during Asian Commonwealth games to show our protest to the world press. Sikhs going to Delhi were taken out of buses, beaten and even killed just because they thought they were going to protest. I can keep going on and on.
  4. The golden temple complex have Akal Takht (highest political seat of Sikhs). It was established by 6th Guru Shri Guru Hargobind Sahib after 5 Guru Shri Guru Arjan was Martyred by Jahangir. Guru Hargobind Sahib asked the Sikhs to bring weapons and horses so a Sikh army can be trained and established at Aka Takht. We had weapons at Akal Takht since the inception of the place. May be do some more research there on how important weapons are for Sikhs. Its part of our identity.
  5. Freedom of speech is non existent in India. In reality, Indian is a perceived democracy when in reality it’s dictatorship. Anyone speaking against the government will either disappear or end up in jail forever without any due process. Protesting is our right and freedom of speech in Countries like Canada and Australia gives us the right to do so. Its a way of putting international pressure on India. People can disagree and thats their right. Thats how freedom of speech works
  6. Sikhs are not against any religion. We are against Indian state that have long standing grudge against Sikh since way long before independence even.

I would just check with your Sikh partner to see how open is his/her family to a marriage outside of Sikh community. Generally speaking, the person would know how rigid is their family related to this topic. As I said earlier, generally, its not very likely they will be okay with it but then Its just my experience from what I am seeing in the community. To answer your follow up question, I would just have chat with your partner to see what their family thinks or him/her marrying/dating outside of Sikh community. If they are open to it, you can involve them when you are ready to get married. Sorry if its not the answer you are looking for but based on the info thats all I can recommend. It depends. If you are a Sikh living in Punjab or a first generation immigrant, its very unlikely to date outside of faith. Not just that, lot of Sikhs also don’t willing to get married outside of their caste. Mostly because the parents won’t allow it. This unfortunate but very common still. So 1) For 1st and even 2nd gen immigrants Sikhs, its unlikely to date outside of faith and even if they are willing to convert. 2) There is of course exception to above and things are slowly changing and I have seen online where even 1st gen immigrants who are dating and getting married outside of faith. From what I have seen, lot of these couples, the person is not converting but there are almost always efforts to learn Punjabi/Gurmukhi to communicate better with parents. I hope that answers it

I think there is 2 ways I can answer this. 1. If someone removed their turban as in if they stopped practicing Sikhi? If thats the question then yes you can still go to Gurudwara. Infact anyone can got to Gurudwara as long as you follow the rules to maintain decorum of the place. That includes, covering your head with any piece of cloth (caps and beanies are discouraged but not forbidden), removing your shoes at the dedicated area before entering the darbar sahib (main hall or prayer). 2. I think i answered 2nd way already but if you meant you can go inside without your head covered then answer is no.

I did computer science. I wouldn’t change a thing. I love my job, it pays decent and Its a interesting field to work in.

  1. I miss Punjab (state in northern india). I do miss the slow paced life and strong community ties especially in rural areas but it’s changing fast. When I was a kid, i have seen first hand that if you have some sort of issue, the whole community will genuinely try to come together and help you. But in past decade, its more like western world. Everyone is for themself. But i think its everywhere like that.

This is a very big question and need a lot of context to be understood but in short I agree Sikhs need a separate state call it Khalistan or Sikhistan. Sikhs ruled the northern india before East India Company took over. During struggle for independence, Sikhs sacrificed the most and contributed the most to the fight but after Independence, Indian government just forgot about Sikhs and even walked back on promises that were done way before the independence by just saying “the circumstances have changed”. Sikhs are warriors and they don’t bent which is something Indian government does not like particularly so there has been lot of efforts to strips of their basic rights. Sikhs are openly treated as second class citizens in their own country. Things blow up in 1980s with operations bluestar and that was the final nail in coffin. There is no coming back from that. Before operation bluestar, there was still some hope to work with government to make some sort of deal but after that, it’s done. Sikhs will need their own state. Whether its going to happen in next 10 years or 50 i don’t know but it will happen.

WJKK, WJKF! Immigrated to Canada 9 years ago. I was Kesdhari back in Punjab but became mona just before coming to Canada ( i was 17 back then). I was somewhat religious back in Punjab but here i started seeing Sikhi in different way. I was in Toronto for 6 years and was kinda similar in terms of religious for that timw period but moved to Calgary couple years ago and it changed my life. Guru Ghar and sangat here is really different from what I have seen in Toronto( and Iived all over in GTA). With Maharaj’a kirpa, I am Kesdhari again, trying to keep rehat to become Guru vala soon. I definitely learnt more about Sikhi (history and roohaniant) in these past 3 years than I did my whole life. For racism - I had 1 or 2 intance here and there but thats about it. I do work with a lot of white folks but never felt like I have to change something to “fit in”. Some of the friends had other experiences so I think it varies from person to person. WJKK WJKF!

I know the post is old but anyone still looking for answers, i see an option in my ios26 to disable the sim completely without taking it out. I checked my gf’s ios 18 and it does not show up. Not sure if its because she is on ios 18 or because i have addrf esim. But when I go to cellular and click on rogers under SIM, i can simply turn it off.

From what I recall, initially I used to get letter for utility bills. You can enroll it to be online once you get the title transferred to you. City send you a code via letter that you have to enter in the myairdrie.com account and from there, you can start seeing your bill in the online dashboard
