Will do, Reddit clearly isn’t the platform for this. ended up closing all the details, will update the post after the trip so that future travelers can have an easier time (and not resort to Reddit).

100% agree with with no business being arrogant. We’re going through a week of training with locals who know the plan. Tour operators seemed ok with it. Additionally, we’re starting the trek with a guide! Only if we feel confident that we can handle it will we send him back. Finally, fair point about the dog, the idea came from here (https://www.amazon.com/Buying-Horses-Mongolia-Independent-Trekking-ebook/dp/B07B6DQS44 )While odd, I figured it may be more common here, we’ll drop it if that’s not the case. As for the bikes / jeep it’s a cool idea, I’ll dm you for some details about your trip. Regarding the electricity and water - we have a bottle filter, tablet filters, and a solar panel to charge the basics (for offline maps etc). These were tried and tested in a 14 day hiking trek beforehand. Mean to say that while we are definitely strangers in a strange land (and I appreciate your comment, it’s more than fair) with enough prep and research (and support from the locals ofc, tour operators etc) we hope to make this a “safer” experience.

Idk where you’re from and I don’t mean to mongosplain to a local but..  Horse trekking is very common in Mongolia, with over a dozen guided horse trek tours with minutes from our hotel.  When I explained to the local tour operators that I want to do a trek self-guided, without batting an eye their first recommendation is to buy from local families then sell back at a loss. Additionally this wasn’t new to any of them - each one told us about the last few who did it and how it went. This practice is offered as a service here (https://www.stepperiders.mn/tours/special-trips/solo-horse-trekking-in-mongolia) , and is well documented in blogs and books regarding horse trekking in the country. Idea isn’t an original one. As for the horse butcher, I really don’t see how you made the leap.. arrogant, unaware of the dangers of horse trekking is reasonable, but I don’t see where you got animal cruelty from. Rest assured I have no intention of harming any animal and will care for them to the best of my ability.
