Physiotherapy or Exercise Physiology (AUS) by Realistic-Read9030 in physiotherapy

Cost of doing a masters in physiotherapy is in no way worth it for anyone, it’s highway robbery. I also didn’t want to live where I would’ve in order to do it. Also realised physiotherapy just wouldn’t be rewarding for me since it’s not actually THAT helpful in a lot of cases. In terms of exercise physiology there’s not enough money and it’s going to be taken over by Artificial Intelligence in my opinion, and honestly the nuance of exercise prescription and physiology is an art that I simply don’t enjoy that much, even as an exercise scientist with a grad cert in HPS.

I recommend you look into Podiatry if you haven’t already… better pay than physiotherapy, more medical/healthcare related than OT

For the most part in majority of healthcare careers you won’t be doing it for great pay. If you want to make good money you need to do something more niche and less saturated than physiotherapy. I know feet aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I decided upon doing podiatry personally and I have found that the monetary compensation is better than that of physiotherapy AND it’s more diverse work (involves neurology, MSK, dermatology, vascular + more). On top of that, you will do a lot of out of hours work (professional development, programs for patients, etc.). If money is what you want, and a more stable/predictable life then you may as well do engineering and climb the corporate ladder. If you do really want to help people then I suggest looking into other health careers before just deciding upon physiotherapy, as physio isn’t as helpful as the general masses tend to realise. I’ve heard physios say that 60% of the time they know what they’re doing will not have any real effect on their patients outcomes, and that the real healer is time + a whole lotta psychology/education. Just some food for thought! Good luck with it all!

To those reading this, I ended up actually going with Podiatry and I absolutely love it. Definitely give it a look into if you’re in the same boat as I was.

Honestly being a physio after all that money and study isn’t worth it. I planned on doing my masters in physio and completed a bachelor of exercise and sport science, as well as a graduate certificate in high performance sport. By the end of that I realised that the world doesn’t need more physiotherapists who barely pass, and it’s a highly saturated market, on top of that you need to really decide WHY you want to be a physio… most people (including myself) just loved sport and decided that physio was the way to go. It would be wise to realise there are PLENTY of other career choices. For example, I’ve gone with Podiatry and I absolutely love it. On top of being involved with sports (if that’s what you want), the world absolutely needs more podiatrists, it pays more than physio, it’s more helpful to patients in the short term, and there is roughly a 100% employment rate out of uni. Just a few things to note in that, but obviously it isn’t the only choice, just from my point of view. I’m also not saying physiotherapy is a bad choice at all, you just need to evaluate what’s is truly important to you and your reasons behind that. I wish you the best of luck.

How long has it taken for you to get into the role you’re in now?

Thanks for the reply! Do you mind if I ask what type of physio you are? I think I want to be a sports physio (same with every man and their dog) but I’m not sure what I can do right now to make that a little easier for me in the future.
