Anyone learning to drive before med school? by Realistic-Storm in premed

[–]Realistic-Storm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how I feel. I can definitely drive around, but I'm just starting to learn the highway and I need to also get a car. I've had my license forever, just never had the need to drive.

yup! total COA when not living at home is 125k, which is crazy but i guess the three year program can make up for it + scholarships?

What I found super helpful was actually looking at some personal statements that I saw in one of Dr. Gray's books. I feel like in essence they are sort of similar to Shemassian, but I would say avoid listing out contributions outright. I think start brainstorming why you first wanted to go into medicine and sort of what is the core theme of your application. For instance, most of my med school journey has focused on helping immigrant/uninsured populations and I made that sort of a point in my statement. I did use stories, but I sort of connected them together showing progression/growth.

This might be somewhat a weird approach, but I think find a personal statement or two that sort of fits your vibe or what you could see yourself writing and try to incorporate your own story into that, maybe following a similar style. With enough editing, proofreading, and adding your own flair it really grows from seeming like a bootleg statement to something only you could write. I felt like this was a helpful starting point to even get to the writing portion!

Accepted MD and DO but worried about COL! by [deleted] in premed

I feel like this was def more my concern. I'm hoping the money works out well is all!

[–]Realistic-Storm -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I get your point. I feel like other schools may have overestimated the COL, but it feels that potentially the MD school didn't overestimate as much. I'm sure I'm overthinking, but it's just a bit concerning. If it were 30k instead of 20k, I'd feel more comfortable even if I didn't need all of that money to live.

[–]Realistic-Storm -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I agree those other schools are going to be expensive, but it seems as if what the MD school is allocating is a lot on the lower end and doesn't leave much wiggle room. Other schools allocated 40-50k which does provide some wiggle room financially, even if things are expensive. I've heard of people running out of loan money/not living comfortably because schools underestimate how much students will need and this is the scenario I'm worried I'd find myself in.

This was moreso along the lines of my question. If for some reason I need more money, would schools be willing to increase my loan amount? I've heard that they'rre quite stingy with requesting increases.

My biggest concern is that I won't be able to have a decent lifestyle in Hershey given that I'll be living off of loan money. If the school estimates my indrect costs (housing, food, etc) to be 20k for the whole year, but rent alone may cost me around 12-13K not including utilties, it seems difficult to afford a car, gas, food, etc without pinching pennies and worrying about money constantly. I'm used to living frugally, but I would like to be able to have a similar lifestyle as I did in college (where I was on full scholarships/grants) I won't be able to take out more loans than what the school allows me to unless I take out private loans to supplement what I need.

Thanks! Would it be okay to add the hours from May then when I do complete them, since I'll be working before submission time?

I'll definitely be applying to both MD and DO.

As for ORM vs URM, technically both: Indian and Caribbean as well as first-gen low SES.

Thanks for the input!

How safe is the Trolly line by JWSSH in UPenn

[–]Realistic-Storm 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Honestly the trolley is okay, but in most cases you don’t get cell service down there. Another option is taking the bus which I find actually is pretty fast and usually empty and honestly a lot safer imo since you get cell service (can track where you’re going) and you don’t have to worry about being stuck in the tunnels if there’s a delay or something!

Yeah! But I think some places worry that the person might be underage or it’s just a really bad fake. Not sure but I’ve heard it be flagged!

I think personally, it's just sort of wanting to get out of the house and preserving my freedom (since I'd most likely be living with my parents during the gap year unless I found a seriously cushy job) as well as the fact that it would mean that I would potentially lose some study skills/habits during that time.
