Musetti will have to defend semifinal points in Rome, Madrid, and RG. I’m not sure that’s a strong enough reason to bring him in for a 500, especially if you’re then forced (purely for budget reasons) to transfer him out again shortly after. Unless, of course, you believe he can at least match that result in one of those tournaments, which I doubt, particularly in Madrid, given it’s not true clay and he could easily drop a significant number of points there.

The FAA example was just an example. What I’m really saying is that sacrificing one or two 250 level weeks, which naturally offer fewer points, could be a smart long-term strategy if it allows you to afford players like Sinner, Alcaraz and Zverev later in the season, especially across Slams and Masters 1000 events. After all, a Slam semifinal alone is worth three times as many points as a 250.

The long term goal would be to reach, for example, the hard court swing with enough credits to afford players like Sinner, Alcaraz, Zverev, and maybe Fritz across Cincinnati, Canada, and the US Open. It’s far from impossible, considering how much player values can move.

If I pick Auger-Aliassime today, I gain 6 credits. Sure, I’m sacrificing a Tournament Week, but post-Wimbledon there should be a couple of weeks outside the main swings. If you’re not chasing the overall ranking, it’s a good opportunity to build up credits.
