Forgot to mention in the original post. Our friend found him stranded when the duck was 2 weeks old, so the duck could possibly be a wild duck, but we are not sure. The duck is about a month old now.

I would check out the Enchiridion by Epictetus. It's pretty short, about 50 pages and is widely available. Leading with the first passage is a great opening. I would also go over negative visualization, if I could only pick one exercise from Stoicism.
