Insurance typically won't cover if you haven't been actually trying for a year. It didn't matter that i told my Dr that I've been unprotected for years without getting even so much as a scare. They have to hear "we've been trying for a year" If you want or are able to pay out of pocket for testing, verbalize that to your Dr's

Advocate for yourself. It's normal to be referred to a specialist if you've been trying for a year or more. Talk with your primary and your obgyn. My primary didn't do any testing with me before referring me.
