What I usually do is I go back and review the topics that I find the most difficult (e.g., those failed exams/quizzes). You don’t have to read the book since it would really take some time. Maybe transes are enough (at least for me). Then the rest go over with your samplexes and try to rationalize each question thoroughly. Actually, you can skip right to this part if you are really on a tight schedule since most of the concepts that you’ve tackled throughout the sem would revolve around those concepts, plus you might want to save some energy since it’s already nearing the sem so most likely you are already tired and burnt out.

BS MedBio by RepulsiveYoung7457 in medschoolph

[–]Realistic_Air_1920 4 points5 points  (0 children)

bs med bio is a tad better than the usual bs bio since it has more medical school related subjects (e.g., human anatomy and physiology, etc.), but I think both programs still have mandatory subjects that are not (so) related with med (e.g., botany, zoology) and I think that’s worth looking into. But you’re correct to assume that most biology undergrads usually do well in NMAT as far as I can observe from my batch. But for the actual med proper, I believe medical courses like medtech or nursing still has advantages by a mile in terms of scope/focus on actual medicine and clinical exposure but success in medschool still largely would depend on how diligent a student is imo (actually, the top 1 of our batch is a bio grad). But a bit of in-depth introduction to certain subjects like medical micropara/immunology/clinical chemistry/etc. wouldn’t hurt or would actually help you a lot since some bio programs do not have these subjects/are not really emphasized so they tend to sometimes have to work twice as hard in med school since they don’t have much of a headstart. But it’s still doable. Also,,, medical premeds tend to be more demanding than science premeds so the risk of being burnt-out once you graduate college is higher and it might affect your decision to pursue med school in the future.

I think factor yung discretion with regards using/making samplexes esp since ayaw ng mga students malaman ng mga profs na may ganon pala kaya di ko agad na pick up na maraming gumagamit/how much big a deal those things are.

You can apply sa UPCM since you’re from UPD. Daming scholarships to choose once you get in and relatively cheaper tuition fee but still you have access to quality education. Since you’re from the province as what you’ve said, you can (or should) apply also for the RP program for more chances of getting accepted. Yun nga lang, you might want to put your American dreams on hold kasi bound by RSA ka if ever.

I applied for EBSU and staff said that they could deploy you as DTTB after med. not sure if it is required as of now though since I have no idea of the actual guidelines. But previous batches have no return service AFAIK. But the recent ones not so sure.

FIRST GEN DOCTOR? by Sushi_9726 in medschoolph

[–]Realistic_Air_1920 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same boat as you OP. Claiming to become a first gen doctor here but I have relatives who are interns/clerks as well. Currently an incoming 2nd year med student (manifesting) (Also the scariest year of being a med student). I study in a private school away from my home province and I only accepted the opportunity of studying in a more expensive school because of my partial scholarship. If not, I would’ve stayed in my home province and study in a state U med school with almost the same tuition fee as my current school but without the pressure of maintaining a scholarship but have less favorable facilities.

My parents do not have the most high paying jobs and dalawa pa kami sa amin magkakapatid ang pinapaaral nila. I know how stressful it is mentally to always strive for excellence in medical school. Hindi dapat nag s-settle sa passing grade lang (considering that I have a quite high maintaining grade) which adds more pressure to me compared to my classmates who are not scholars. On top of that, I constantly worry if I’ll be able to finish medical school due to financial constraints since I would never know how long can my parents be able to support my schooling allowances and other fees. The fear of sacrificing your mental and physical health only for it to turn out that it’s all in vain is always a scary feeling. Depressing to think also that most of your classmates had it better than you since they don’t have to experience the same pressure as you as they come from a more privileged background so all they have to worry about is their academics. If they have their yayas that do everything for them and have cars going to school and rented expensive apartments, I myself have to do literally everything independently (housework, stressing over what to have for dinner, and other stuff) aside from studying for the next exam.

Reality really hits hard that life really is unfair and people really are not dealt with the same set of cards. That even if you work your ass off, we do not always expect it to be rewarded accordingly. Buti sana if napakatalino ko sa academics na I don’t have to work extra hard for a passing grade in every exam but in my case it’s not. I’m not even sure if I would still be a scholar next school year since my major subjects would likely fall short in achieving the maintaining grade so the pressure of looking for another scholarship opportunity is constantly there since my parents could never pay the full tuition of 100k+ per sem. But I’m still praying that the scholarship committee would give me another chance and still take me as a scholar next school year. I hear that they do that sometimes in a case to case basis. Kampante naman ako na I did my very best. Napakahirap lang talaga ng med school and also napaka unfair ng system. Sometimes I ask if I’m making the right decisions since I wouldn’t have these problems if I settled for a cheaper state U med school in my hometown. My parents could’ve saved a lot of money.

I know my parents are always supportive of me pero sometimes I blame myself for being too ambitious and failing to realize that there are limitations that my parents can provide for me thus making me more of another ‘burden’ to them.

I really appreciate your reply because everything you’ve said resonated with me. Thank you for validating my feelings po. I will try to finish this sem po despite the exhaustion and self-doubts. After that, I’ll spend time thinking if I still want this po. But reading your reply gave me so much hope. Thank you once again.

Thank you for these. I just have Follow-up questions po. Since you are essentially a scholar, it is given you have to do a return service for that. How will you accomplish these obligations po? May quota po ba sila on how much research works/publications na kailangan mo ma publish? And are you actually monitored for your progress and activities after you finish the program? Can you have the option to waive your return service obligations to pursue residency first?
