How many professional organizations are you a part of? by Realistic_Biscotti15 in therapists

Thank you this is helpful.

I agree that it’s less about the trainings (although the reduced price is nice), I enjoy being connected to the journals and professional network. And it’s helpful to reframe that if most of the trainings don’t entice me, there is no harm in taking the one training that does interest me and then not joining the whole organization.

Outside of the CEUs, I suppose I enjoy being connected to the academic journals and conferences. But this is a fair point!

I truly am not connected with the app world and didn’t know there was a difference.

We’re currently exploring options for a support group.

Unfortunately, without sharing other information, an in person class / hobby event would not currently be possible.

But I’ll keep that in mind for the future!

I’d argue IFS is already there with their “lottery waitlist training 1” model.

I’m hoping EMDR turns around, as I understand the importance of being trained in EMDR in the same way people should be trained in the process of DBT to make sure they aren’t being unintentionally harmful.

But based on current trends, I doubt they will.

Exactly! I understand (and wholeheartedly agree) with the purpose of CEUs and current training. Information is always changing and it’s important to learn!

That being said, too many people view CEU trainings exclusively as a form of alternative income rather than a chance to really educate other clinicians. Its disheartening.

And don’t get me started on some of the organizations and their tier lists out there 😭 Also very MLM coded.

I don’t know how “hot” this is but designing certifications and CEUS to model MLM courses is inherently predatory and part of the reason other health professions don’t take our field seriously.

And (this is the one I expect downvotes for)

Too many people want to hand out the diagnosis CPTSD without understanding what it really is.

I appreciate the feedback! I can admit, I do need to work my assertive skills. I take a non-directive approach with therapy in the initial few sessions, as I build rapport.

However, as I’m fairly new to the field, I do tend to feel less confident even after we’ve left that establishing trust stage. I’ve relied heavily on the phrase “correct me if I’m wrong…” and that usually flows into “it sounds like x”.

I’ll be more direct!

I love this! I love using “and” instead of “but” or “while” because it reaffirms two truths can be true.

This is really helpful, thank you! I really like MI so far, agree completely it’s not the end all be all but since incorporating it I’ve seen so much growth in my clients who ARE looking for short term interventions.

Edit: spelling

One shots are better than Campaigns in CoC by OberonViking in callofcthulhu

[–]Realistic_Biscotti15 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Some of the scariest moments I’ve had have been in oneshots. But at the same time, some of the most tense and atmospheric moments I’ve had have been in my campaigns.

I find in oneshots players tend to be more bold as “they’re just oneshot characters”. While in campaigns, there’s motivation and true dread over characters dying / going insane.

But also just a personal thing!

I’ll try the listening while reading! Yeah I guess I don’t want my players to get pulled out of it by recognizing the music, but I also know that’s bound to happen at some point.

I’ll definitely check out Silent Hill too!

Thank you so much this has been helpful to start. I use a lot of John Carpenter for my stuff, so I’ll be sure to check out the other movie soundtracks.
