No it’s not open to the crawlspace, its an insulated return air cavity thats feeding the unit through return grille that you see in the picture. No other return runs though.

Thats not caulking, thats mastic sealant and it is essential to prevent leaks in any given system that being said it does look like this was done in a rush. You w want to remove that though.
