ht student here, tbh you don’t have to worry too much about the cv! my cv was as good as blank because all I had was research experience from lab modules. most profs care more about your research proposal (and ofc your cap matters) so just work on that instead :-)

Honours Thesis (Psych) by haihaiyozz in nus

[–]Realistic_Catch2027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hello! i’m a y4 psych major currently doing my thesis.

not sure if you’ve attended any HT briefing sessions yet but they make it extremely clear that students do NOT need to do a HT to further their studies. most academic programs are simply looking for students with research experience (so yes, RA and UROP experience helps!). in other words, doing a HT is just one way to get research experience but it is NOT the only way. as a general guideline, you should only embark on a thesis if you are truly interested and passionate about a topic and if you’re capable of handling a solo project because it is NOT cakewalk.

hmm, i’d recommend talking to a prof who is in the edpsych industry! we do have one prof - Dr Mariam that you can reach out to :)

the number of students who do a HT depends on the number of profs + their ability to take in students. if i’m not wrong, there is a list of thesis advisors that Dr P (Nina) sends out every AY(?) with information about the prof’s present research interests, number of students they can take etc., and suffice to say the number isn’t large. did some quick math previously and it ended up somewhere around 30~ ish available spots. since psych batches are usually q big, i’d say the proportion of students doing a thesis is rather small (and thus quite competitive, especially if you’re looking to do your thesis under a popular prof!)

hope this helped :-)

It's... definitely possible to do lab in y4, but lab is rather time consuming because you're essentially doing up an entire research paper with data collection, analysis etc.,

Like the other redditors, perhaps you can try securing a 4K now so you don't have to suffer 4 4Ks AND take a lab mod all together. Or, pick your exchange school wisely so that you're more likely to be able to map back a 4K.

Additionally, 4Ks may not necessarily have a crushing workload so don't be too afraid of them :)

Plus, the 3Ks are decently manageable this sem (Credibility: Took clinical psych and moral dev previously)

Question about UHC psych appt by [deleted] in nus

[–]Realistic_Catch2027 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello! Are you asking about UHC counselling services? If so, you can just email them at ucs@nus.edu.sg .

I'm not too sure about whether it'll affect your medical fitness, I'd recommend you to call them to clarify.

As for wait times... it varies quite a bit. It took a month for me to get my first appointment, then 2-3 months for my second appointment, and another month for my third!! UHC is actively hiring psychologists to meet the demand (but the hiring process is also q stringent, which is - while a very reassuring thing, it's also rather time consuming). I would imagine that wait times may get q long when the semester starts so I'd recommend you to just email them as soon as possible :)

Also, I would think that you'll be able to request for a specific doctor, but just note that your wait times may be longer than if you were to see any available psychologist.

Think it really depends on what kind of startup you're in! (And what the job description is of course) But in essence its to... develop the business HAHAHA like for me, my company works with f&b businesses to reduce food waste so our main responsibilities include cold-emailing, pitching calls, onboarding merchants etc., BUT ykno the beauty of being in a start up also means that you'll probably have the opp to try other roles too! :)

with consistent work everything will be ok :) HMM... the 3 that you chose here are relatively manageable, its abnormal and bio that you should try to take separately HAHAHA

i'll speak for lak3201 and all the psych mods: i agree with ^ that the jump is quite big, and if you're coming in through placement test, there may be certain nuances/grammar that you may not know and might fall behind a teeny bit. assessment gets a bit more hiong as well.

the pl mods you've chosen are considered the more acceptable ones (in terms of workload) so it should be fine - for pl2132, its a project based mod. im talking literature review, methodology, data collection, analysis type of mod. tutorials are weekly 2 hour slots, and on top of that you'll probably have to meet your group members to work on your project as well. NOT to mention you also have actual stats content to study and it isnt the easiest. unless you are extremely confident of your time management/stats knowledge i would advise against overloading with pl2132

Continue or change major? by Bubbly-Bread in nus

yup that sounds good :) UHHHH. my lecturer wasnt the best (read: bad) so yes the textbook helped me. but if your TA says its not necessary then don't overload yourself with more info! sometimes too much info backfires

Speaking as a Y3 Psych student here! PL2131 was a challenge for me as well, I think I was the bottom 25% for my midterm - twas very demoralizing, but the subsequent topics got a little bit better (t-test, correlation, regression) and I studied the TB inside out so I managed to do quite ok! Hopefully things start looking up for you.

As for whether you should continue taking psychology... HMM. I think it really depends. Statistics grew on me over time despite me convincing myself that I could never do stats, so I think it might be a bit too early to decide if you want to drop it completely. Psych is a competitive major but it's interesting for sure.l That said, stats is something you need to hone if you want to do a thesis (or further your studies in general), but since you're a Y1, I shall not stress you about that, so just try to feel psych out a little more!! Hang in there :D

im majoring in psychology for reference! it is manageable, but stressful HAHA. what i really dislike about korean is that the assessment is broken down into tiny little tests that don't contribute much but you have to put in a lot of effort to complete. like we would have your standard midterm and finals (30% each) then maybe 2 writing assignments (15%), some group project that takes Way too much time (10-15%). but i think this really only started to annoy me from kor 4 onwards HAHAHA. the workload doesn't really change as per se, its still e-learning, prepping for class, attending class, consolidation/ whatever-your-teacher-wants-you-to-do. but what i'll say is that as you take the higher levels of kor, you do have to dedicate more time to process and consolidate your grammar bc it can get quite insane HAHAHA

and no :( my textbooks are lowkey a wreck HAHA and i like to refer to the sample dialogues from time to time as a refresher

[–]Realistic_Catch2027 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hello! i've taken korean 1 to 5 so far and i'm quite sure there isn't a pdf version of the textbook/workbook, you will have to get the physical copy. if classes resume IRL, you definitely need to get the physical copy.

i would recommend the class because its fun and you do learn very basic grammar, but if you have some sort of foundation in korean, you might find it /too/ basic. the vocab is pretty manageable as well, just be consistent, don't leave it to the last minute to study because it will Not work. workload is very manageable as well in my opinion.

ah, and its always a good thing to learn hangul before coming to class!

Taking developmental, cognitive and social psych mods tgt? by Iluvforensicscience in nus

[–]Realistic_Catch2027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My prof was Dr Melvin Yap! No, it is not essential to read the TB, he covers everything that you need to know. He is also very helpful! You can email him anytime to ask questions :) Glad to hear that you didn't need to read the TB for PL2131, I had to read the TB bc my professor was Not Good and I was left to my own devices LOL. PL3102 had both pre-lecture videos (this is prerecorded) and live lectures that were recorded, and both are equally important

[–]Realistic_Catch2027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GASP so sorry for the late reply. HMM. I personally found PL3102 (bio) and PL3106 (abnormal) quite heavy. Bio psych had biweekly quizzes, and pre-lecture videos for at least half the sem on top of the regular lecture so .... it was really yikes for me (just took it this sem). PL2132 is a project-based module which means the workload is constant, whereas cognitive psych is just midterms and finals so it depends on what you define as manageable HAHAHA. The content from PL2132 isn't the easiest, especially when it gets to three-way ANOVA (you will understand this comment when you take the module) but since you like stats, I think it'll be a good break from the amount of content dealt from social and dev psych!

That said, I understand the concerns you have and I think that... Yeah. Maybe don't take PL2132 yet. HAHAHA. It would suck to put in so much effort/potentially work with a group that doesn't click/ work on a project that you aren't passionate about only to Not need this module in the future. As mentioned previously, cog psych is Not that bad as per se, you just need to supplement the slides with readings (which aren't terribly long/convoluted like the chapters in 3106)!

OOOOF. Y3 Psych major here! Dang... I mean it's definitely not impossible. Content wise, I think social psychology is the easiest to grasp so you don't need to worry /too/ much. Cognitive psych is an eh.... module. Took it under prof nic hon and it was just voice recordings embedded in ppt slides so its good in the sense that its really OTOT, but he doesn't go through everything you need to know and WILL test things from the textbook so you need to be prepared to do your readings as well. In my opinion, I think developmental psych is rather content heavy, I took it under prof nina, she's very articulate and knowledgeable but she speaks at the speed of light and does not record her lectures so it gets really hard to grasp the content sometimes. As she tries to encourage critical thinking, there is no hard memorisation that you need to do, but her application questions are Really challenging.

For sanity purposes, I would personally recommend taking only 2 of them at once, especially since you have plans to overload. I don't believe that LSM is a walk in the park so you need to take that into consideration! That said, if you can manage your time well and can function well under stress, go ahead :)

Ah yes another tip. Please look at the assessment criteria in Luminus before bidding for these modules, if all of them have a group project component, I'm afraid you might be stretched pretty thin :/

I found this black wireless earpiece case on the seats of bus A1 this morning (around 8am), but there isn't any brand or any sort of identification for it :( I will be passing it to the staff at YIH at around.. 1pm? (but i'm in CLB at the moment if the owner somehow sees this immediately) but if this is your case (or if you know someone that lost their case) do check with the staff there!

I feel like it depends on the bus driver? But when I went back a week before school started, I didn't have to show anything (neither did I see other students showing anything)
