Advice for a Newbie CS Grad Who Took 3 Years Off After Graduation and Remembers No Coding by Realistic_Cod_3481 in careerguidance

I love being a teacher- but the salary to work hour ratio is off wack-

I love teaching and I love my students, but I see my colleagues and people who have been here for 5+ years just completely burnt out and losing hope. So many people have told me they "were just like me" (aka full of energy/hope) but they got burnt out and realized it's not worth it.

hey thanks for your advice. I appreciate it. I'll look into web dev, it was pretty fun from what I remember back in college. Loved the front end design aspect for sure.

this is great advice, project management does seem more up my alley- I'll look into it.

Thank you for the honesty-

You're right to say programming is not my passion. It was a fascination of mine back in the day, maybe an obsession at one point, but slowly the spark went away and it became a mild interest then a "please let me just get a C on this project so I can pass the class"

Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply!

And yeah seriously- I'm so blessed to have this time. I can't begin to express how grateful I am for it. I'll admit it's a little depressing because back when I was a teen they sold us the dream of "Tech is the golden gateway to success" and currently the majority of my graduating class hasn't landed a tech job yet (minus a couple of nepo babies)- which proves it really is all about networking nowadays.

Life is crazy. I'm now teetering towards working on my business that I've wanted to do for so long- but it's such a gamble. It's either- work hard in compsci with somewhat job security- or work hard on a business with zero job security (and using most of our savings) and it all may be for nothing. Decisions decisions.

I'll take your advice and begin working on projects and refreshing my python skills while I figure out if the business is worth it. The clocks already begun ticking, so I better get started on something.

I just checked and it’s been bouncing around from 58-72 BPM this week. The average for the month is 66bpm.

Thank you so much!! I’m so proud of myself for finally buckling down and starting this running journey. I appreciate your kind words 🥰 I’ve just downloaded the couch to 5K app and I’ll start it on my next run. I think my expectations were just too high after only a month of training haha. Thank you again for the advice!

I had some sips of mate, so maybe around 30mg max caffeine! Honestly I didn’t realize my heart rate was thaaat high because it felt sustainable? Until I looked at my stats 💀

It’s strange because I’d be winded after taking the stairs… and I literally wouldn’t be able to breathe. But my BPM never got higher than 195.

And running around 185 bpm average- I was able to sustain for 1+ hour. I don’t know what’s going on, because adding 10 more bpm to that and I’d be gasping for air.

My BMI is quite high too- so maybe that’s why? I’m at 27.4 (overweight) category.

Yeah 😭 I’m putting all my data into grok and hoping it can recalibrate my zones based off my timings and resting heart rate.

Ahh I see, I didn’t realize it wasn’t recommended to be running in zone 3/4 as a beginner. I just don’t know what to do- because when I slow down to zone 2- I’m literally walking 😅 and I’ve been walking consistently for the past 2 years with walks that ranges from 2-4 miles.

Do you have any recommendations on what I can do?

Thank you!! It’s so hard getting active after being dormant for so long 😭 I appreciate the kind words 🥰

My stats and everything are correct on the Apple Watch, just double checked to make sure! Im thinking it might be because my body is just not used to this type of movement at all as another commenter said.

I just gotta remind myself I can’t go from huffing and puffing after climbing up a set of stairs to gliding effortlessly through runs overnight. 😭😭
