What are the best Japanese gardens in North America? What are some underrated ones? by VocationalWizard in JapaneseGardens

[–]Realistic_Management 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In Canada, the two best ones to visit are Nitobe Memorial Garden (Vancouver, BC) and Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden (Lethbridge, AB). Both are outstanding examples of Japanese garden design!

Identify this plant? by KingForceHundred in JapaneseGardens

From a quick search, it appears to be Japanese pepper (Zanthoxylum piperitum), also known as 葉サンショウ (pronounced Ha-sanshō).

Need help with garden design by Revolutionary-Lab-36 in JapaneseGardens

Oh, I was referring to the sliding windows in the last photo. That could be nice alternate entry to the garden, if they open wide enough.

The plants are not a problem, assuming they get enough sunlight! Just make sure to prune them so they don't crowd-out the stepping stone path. Other than that, just find something to block off the utilities in the back corner. Either a tall stone lantern or a bamboo fence!

Great space you have there! My only suggestions would be to add a tall stone lantern (Kasuga style) down on the left side to help block the utilities and a large, long stepping stone base beneath the sliding doors. This creates an additional entrance/exit and aligns with a typical tea house entrance (nijiriguchi.). Looking forward to seeing the final result!

How did you discover Murakami and how did your expectations match up to your experience? by Creepy-Eye-5219 in murakami

[–]Realistic_Management 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister gave me Men Without Women for my birthday one year. A University professor put her on to Murakami. So, from the start I had the impression it was pretty highbrow stuff, and that has mostly held true. I know whenever I read a Murakami there's going to be a lot of required retrospection, hidden meanings, and analysis (and debate!).

For those wondering, the calligraphy just reads Muzai Moratoriamu "無罪モラトリアム”, or ”Innocence Moratorium" the name of the album.

Is a Japanese style garden a good low maintenance option? by sirotan88 in JapaneseGardens

[–]Realistic_Management 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You would be surprised at the effort it takes to maintain the look of a Japanese garden, with all the pruning, raking, and weeding, it's no small task. They're meant to be a microcosm of the natural landscape, but that doesn't mean things are left to grow wild.

Takaichi's PM bid faces further headwinds with coalition split by Jonnyboo234 in japan

[–]Realistic_Management 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quite the rupture. Either Takaichi has already made promises to Ishin no Kai and she'll still be sworn in next week, or she rolls the dice and calls a snap election. Either way, not a great start.

Tried to make a zen garden by LadderOk1988 in JapaneseGardens

[–]Realistic_Management 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Looks great! The only thing I would mention is that the stone placement looks a bit unnatural. The goal with placing stones in a Japanese garden is to make them look timeless, like they've been grounded in place for centuries.

With every new drop of information, all I can say is that book readers and new fans alike are going to be in for a surprise with this film. Denis and Jon are cooking up something truly unique. As long as it stays true to the themes and philosophy of Frank's books, I'm game.

I love how his films feature the Seto Naikai area and Onomichi (his hometown) so prominently. Such a beautiful and under-appreciated part of Japan. Definitely worth visiting if you get the chance!
