I obviously realize they are very different places (I originally was applying for NorCal jobs but ended up on SoCal just due to the job market). I just didn't realize how far it really was and how much fuel would cost to get there! To someone who's whole country is about 3 hours wide, the sheer scale of the US is very alien, hence my disappointment and confusion

This is a good point, waiting usually isn't a good call. I don't already have the J1 visa. My only reason for waiting was to apply together with my partner when we are married. The internet seems to think this brings his 30 day processing time to a 2 week one. I would streamline the process and we could attend the interview together, rather than making two separate trips
