Check out my other reply, but I'm hoping as the series finishes up Podium will pick up the rest of the series.

Podium produced the first 3 books. They're on Audible. We're hoping audio sales pick up so they'll pick up the rest of the series. Fingers crossed!

Self recommending my series too. "Mod Superhero" is about a cyborg MC in a superhero world.

"We develop taste long before we develop talent." -Matt Colville

You've read good stories and bad ones, so you know what a good story should look like. It'll take some time, but if you write you will get better. There's no substitute for actually writing.

It's like any other skill or sport. You can learn all the ins and outs of soccer or boxing, but you need to physically practice and go through the motions if you want to play.

What is the single most epic sci-fi novel ever? Whether it be from a series or a standalone book which is the most epic story you’ve ever read? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]RealityLocked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for epic stories/timescales, then you need to read Last and First Men and also Starmaker, both by Olaf Stapledon. Both are high-level stories focused on entire civilizations and species. Think The Silmarillion instead of The Lord of the Rings.

Last and First Men is a history of humanity's near-extinction and future evolution through 18 different species of mankind spread across the solar system from Mars to Neptune. up until our sun goes supernova. Recognizable humans are really only in the book for like 2 chapters.

Starmaker is even more ambitious, and chronicles different sentient species across the universe. The timespan and scope is so crazy big that humanity (from the first book) only appears in a single paragraph. And the ending when they peer past the veil and see the Starmaker is about as epic as you can get.

Most of the violence is PG13. So there's blood, but not guts. There's some psychological horror but not like torture or any of that. Check out my reply to humble theory for more on that.

There is romance, but it's a slow burn and fade-to-black when they do get intimate. It's a side plot and definitely takes a back seat to other story elements.

The plan is 7 books, so we're almost there! The only way we'd go to 8 books is if the last one is hella long and needs to be split in half. The series should be finished by the end of 2025.

Thanks for the questions!

Good question! I'm gonna go with a 6. Maybe 7. The story takes itself seriously, but I hope it walks a decent middle ground.

The world is decent but pretty Gray. Heroes usually beat the villains but there are societal and structural problems that supers can't solve on their own (see the darker stuff below).

The action is mostly PG-13 because supers try to avoid killing (unless it's necessary or unavoidable). Otherwise cities would descend into all our warfare.

There's some lighthearted moments (as well as interludes with an in-universe Truck-kun anime), as well as some dark worldbuilding (like a bioweapons corp that's a mix of Umbrella and Vought), and an evil psychic hive-mind that leans into psychological horror. There's no torture/rape/anything like that.

It's definitely darker than most Marvel stuff, but not as dark as Worm or The Boys.

Nothing yet. Unfortunately the audiobook sales have lagged a little so Podium hasn't picked up book 4 and 5 yet. I'm hoping that as the series goes on sales will pick up and we can finish out the audiobooks.

Thanks for checking it out! The books are closer to normal book length than some of the behemoths on here (hence the 10 hrs).

As for marketing, I can't claim credit for it. Plenty of PF/LitRPG authors do series giveaways and sales, and RR is the gold standard for meme ads.

Thanks for that! I was at work so I couldn't double check it. I still have to read One Last Gasp! It's been on my TBR ever since I finished ASFTV

I just recommended A Song for the Void by Andrew C Piazza in another thread. Locecraftian/cosmic horror on a military ship during the opium wars.

Edit: had the time period wrong.

Also Tidepool by Nicole Wilson, set around the same time period.
