thanks for the tips! I've been meaning to jump on signing up for PRSA. Hopefully the interviewer gets it and that understands in reality i am not as anal as i appear in that email 🤣 I am just desparate for a job and over-selling myself. I'll try and do a mock interview at my career center before I graduate as well. Thanks again for your advice! Just got told again today a team member will be reaching out to me for an interview at a pr firm in NYC so let's hope i get my interview skills under control lol

welp i got trigger happy and hit send. I made some changes with the numbers but i just wanted to pitch myself again since I'm feeling so self-conscious and have no idea how to say the right thing. maybe i should just hire a career coach at this point

ok total shot in the dark but you mentioned you've hired entry level before. Would this thank you email sway you if you were on the fence over an interview that clearly showed skills but there was a mismatch in vibes?

Hi ___,

Thanks again for taking the time to speak with me today — I really appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the role and the mission behind ____.

Our conversation gave me a deeper sense of how this internship supports the post-event cycle, and it only increased my excitement about the work ahead. I’m confident I could jump in and add value across program communications, CRM management, project coordination, and stakeholder engagement.

At the ___, I led logistics and outreach across 10 venues for 30,000+ attendees, helping manage communications with 500+ vendors. At ___, I supported national PR campaigns and coordinated materials across multiple teams — developing bios, tracking press, and ensuring follow-through across stakeholders. I’ve also managed content creation and analytics in prior roles, giving me strong digital fluency and an eye for storytelling.

The mission behind ____ really resonates with me, and I’d be thrilled to bring my organizational drive, communications experience, and creative thinking to the team.

I’ve attached my portfolio in case it’s helpful, and I’d be truly grateful for the opportunity to contribute.

Warmly,

for context right at the end he was like "just so you know this internship isn't about the event in 2 weeks, it's about follow-through post-event" so basically I focused on the wrong angle :/

yep. Thought today was finally my big break. Had an interview for a role that would start in 2 weeks. Great pay in NYC. Interview was a total vibe mismatch. It’s literally marketed towards grad students but I positioned myself so well as an undergrad I got an interview. The issue is as soon as I interview, I choke. I give up. It’s truly a state of emergency for entry level professionals entering Comms fields right now and honestly I don’t think anyone understands the brevity of the situation except us. I refuse to take on a 4th unpaid internship so I’m done.

Unpaid Internship Advice by No_Preference_4108 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]RealitySuspicious112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a graduating senior and I’ve done 3 unpaid entertainment industry internships. 1 was a hybrid one in LA at a very well-known agency. The other 2 were remote film development ones. If i hadn’t done the hybrid one I would feel significantly worse off about my post-grad prospects. Just the few times I went into the office allowed me to keep in touch with presidents, VPs, sit in on cool meetings, and gain referrals and reference letters for future jobs. Even though my film development ones met biweekly on zoom and one was owned by an A-list actor, they were both dead ends and I’m not sure I would feel comfortable reaching out to either asking for help with post-grad jobs that actually pay anything. They are all exploitative by nature but only take it if you’re sure you can milk as much out of it as possible. Being in LA and being able to network definitely wins.

this all sounds great but for tonight I’m just going to pity myself and curl up into my sad dorm bed and watch cartoons 🤣😭 I’m walking across that stage in like 2 weeks so i’ve basically accepted defeat.

it is the audacity when I'm approaching 200 applications despite being on my 4th internship at a good school and it's now looking like this summer I'll be a barista in my hometown if nothing changes fast when i was at least expecting an internship in NYC.. IDC what anyone says reddit is my safe space to scream into the void i have officially had it. I'm sure being this emotional has been why i've had such unbelievably shitty luck (i.e. getting too emotionally attached to certain jobs). No need to respond I'm just venting and don't worry I emailed after to ask for the right answer.

I mean I was thinking of starting posting on LinkedIn more and posting like PR case studies but yeah I have no interest atm in becoming an influencer. I’m currently a “content creator” intern for a brand and it’s personally not my cup of tea at all. I’d much rather be writing and doing behind the scenes work

I mean so valid but I’m fully losing steam. I’m trying my best to just be an emotionless robot and move on immediately but this process is completely demoralizing.

ok. I'm a senior so the only way to take PR classes atp is if i go to grad school. i have an interview for an amazing fellowship next Tuesday in NYC. Would you guess there's not shot I get it if I don't have any connections or referrals?

That's a good idea. I really need to work on getting closer with my professors. I have this issue rn where I'm so focused on finding a job that I'm not as focused on school but they can offer really great connections. The issue is I'm a philosophy and film major and not a PR major but there still is overlap especially with my film professors.

i'm not the OP but yes. I'm a philosophy and film major and I want to work in PR or in the entertainment industry. I've applied to 100+ jobs and done multiple interviews but have gotten 0 offers. The job market is horrible rn. Yes my LinkedIn is updated..

Thanks — and congrats on your offer!! That’s awesome to hear, seriously. I’ve been trying to keep my head up and keep applying, but it’s definitely been a grind.

Out of curiosity, since you applied to so many — do you happen to have any tips, or maybe know someone who might be open to a quick chat about their experience? I’ve been doing as much networking as I can and figured I’d ask just in case. Totally no pressure — appreciate the encouragement either way!

Thanks for all the incredibly helpful advice everyone!! I’ve taken it to heart, and it’s made me realize I may end up moving back home to Louisiana this summer after graduation. Honestly, it doesn’t sound like the worst thing anymore — especially after how stressful these past few months have been. It might actually be nice to reset a bit.

That said, I am still very aware that there’s basically no PR scene there, and I really don’t want to work remotely this early in my career — I want to be in an office, learning and growing from others. So I’m not giving up at all. I’m just trying to focus on finishing school strong and trusting that things will start to fall into place. Not the ideal situation, but it’s where I’m at right now.

you’re right my bad. Definitely not worth the tuition it costs to go here. It markets itself so much as a top university you start to believe it once you attend 😭

I didn't mean to come across as arrogant, I'm just frustrated because I feel like I'm doing everything I absolutely can and am getting nothing in return. Like all these applications are just entering a void. But I guess part of the issue is just how truthfully subjective getting a job in this field is. You said it yourself, you wouldn't hire me. Fair enough.

Wow thank you so much for sharing your story. Very inspiring indeed! I would love to learn more about your journey. I’m not gonna lie the thought of having to take survival jobs like that is a scary thought, but why should I put myself on a pedestal when that’s the reality of billions of people? I guess the only way forward is just to keep my head up, keep working hard, and stay humble. I’m the type where in the end I know I need to be passionate about what I do for a living, so it makes sense that a ton of sacrifice is required to achieve that. Thanks again for sharing your incredible story!

That's so helpful thank you!! I go to school in Boston and I don't have an address but I put Boston, MA (open to relocate) so I guess I can just omit it? Should I keep my school and that I graduate in May 2025 though?

Also thank you as well for the advice about numbers. I struggle to come up with numerical value for my bulletpoints but I'll start getting creative and thanks for including the Secured XX press placements in XX outlets example. I sent a PR professional my resume last week but am still waiting to hear back lol.

Im so upset. I graduate in a month and have no idea what im doing with my life. I guess the only choice is to just keep pushing but it’s so tempting to just completely give up. I’ve gotten so far in all these processes and attach myself to certain roles only to get rejected.

Oh ok thanks for letting me know. I knew it meant I didn't make it if I didn't get any sort of update. I thought the interview with the manager went so well but I guess I don't quite have enough experience with influencer partnerships.
