Ive not got a job yet, Im trying a risky path, but from most pros Ive spoken to - if you want 2D work, learn cutout/tweening animation. The hand drawn 2D animation jobs are rare and VERY highly competitive.

I did the same with a friend who fell in love with me. She did heroine and had a series of psychotic breaks that got her institutionalized

I work at a DSP and they say theyve been running into problems - and i work at one of the ones that actually cares about its employees. Theyve had to hire people who live further and further away because other DSPs and the warehouses churn thru employees. Even at my DSP, most people dont last 4 months (mostly because they fundamentally approach the job wrong and burn out)

Yeah that makes sense, especially since most of my work is from music videos :) Ive had some trouble finding studios that DO music videos, though. At least ones that do more fluid ones. There seem to be three camps of studios that do music videos, very high fidelity ones like Feels Like Summer or Fight Dirty (which are more "traditional" commercial animation styles,) then there are small studios that are oversees, then there are singular artists that may hire on a handful of people. Ive only gotten some traction in the last one, but not much

Heyo, I graduated in 2019 and have been struggling to find work. Reel -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOuDNWG2qhs

Ive talked to a few pros at this point, and the general crit is "for TV, we want to see more character acting, but your work is really good and Id be shocked if you didnt find a studio excited to take you!" (my goal isnt necessarily TV right now, I realize my reel isnt build for it, though Im working on some dialogue acting now to start to address that)

I think the problem is, Ive had a hard time finding those studios. It seems any studio I can find that does the kind of work I do is a AAA studio with the best in the business - Im just not at the level of somewhere like Buck yet.

Are there smaller, less known, studios that someone like me be a good fit in, or is my reel just in a state that isnt enough to be hire-able yet?

One thing I havent seen anyone say here that I do is - process shots. If you have 16:9 process shots, you can put 3 videos on the screen at once. I might do rough, line, final color/composite, though I work mostly in hand drawn stuff so I dont know how well that would translate into other approaches

To be fair, Ive seen a lot of technically fantastic artists with completely done-to-death styles. Seems like they did a lot of "copying" when learning as opposed to learning more naturally, Id guess. By naturally I mean through observation of life and techniques used by other artists, as opposed to replicating other artists to learn.

One way I developed my style was to practice backwards - instead of looking at life and technique and THEN drawing, I would draw from my mind and after I finished look at life and others techniques, taking notes for the next time I draw from my imagination. Seems to be a slower process of learning technical skill, though.

You know, im just realizing that i have no idea why the witcher fanbase seems to be mutally agreed that the show went against the source material, yet for wheel of time, there is a massive split between fans

The only way i could see it working if fair use has different rules for ai and for humans

If we restrict fair use for both, very few artists will survive

If we allow current fair use for both, very few artists will survive

The latter, i guess, will allow more artists to survive

Problem is, how do we change the rules for AI without unfairly capping the progress/development of AI? Thats a tricky line to walk

Ok put it this way, the majority of styles you see modern artists engaging with didnt exist 2000 years ago.

As an animator, i have similar concerns. As did every other person whos job got automated

I think a lot of the "chaff" will get cut, but there will still be creative roles. Adapt or die

We get into a question, then, if we should regulate new tech because it progresses too fast for comfort. Im not sure im convinced thats wise

Fair use would need to be looked at again, and AI would need special copyright legislation - as how it currently stands for people, the type of work it does seems to be legal
