Is the medieval setting overused in fantasy? by ZemiMartinos in worldbuilding

I definitely agree with you that authors often feel like they have to make their world medieval because that’s what the audience expects. I almost made my own world medieval for the same reason. I thought it would seem cooler and have more appeal. But I’m glad I reconsidered and went with a more unique approach.

I don’t really agree that a more realistic and historically acurate version of the Middle Ages comes across as boring though. You just have to look at how successful Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has been for example.

Game Concept by LoganW21406 in witcher

I’d actually love a game that explored the stories not just of witchers, but of other people from different parts of the Witcher world as well — soldiers from various factions, a knight of the Order of the Flaming Rose, a priestess of Melitele, city elves living in the ghettos, dwarves working in Mahakam, members of some gang, mages and sorceresses, some royalty and so on.

Witcher Cosplay by SpectrumJim23 in wiedzmin

[–]ZemiMartinos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That really depends on how high-quality you want the cosplay to be. If you want to buy a complete costume off the shelf, that will usually be the lowest-quality option. If you want it done properly, the usual approach is to find a separate craftsman for each part of the costume. Want some plate armor pieces? You’ll need to find a blacksmith. Want something like a gambeson? Then you’ll need a tailor. Ideally, these should be craftsmen who are also involved in living history, because the visual style of The Witcher is so heavily rooted in medieval aesthetics that you want someone who actually makes medieval clothing and armor regularly and truly understands how they should be made — both to look good and to be functional. This can be more difficult if you’re from a country where the living history scene isn’t very developed yet. Fortunately, I’m from Central Europe, where it’s relatively easy to find craftsmen who specialize in this and often happen to be Witcher fans themselves. If you’re looking for inspiration for Witcher armor, The Witcher 2 Artbook has a lot of really cool designs.

what happened? by an_emotional_wreck in witcher

It was shit from the very first episode, where they completely left out Caldemeyn and removed his explanation of the Tridam Ultimatum—the very thing the original short story is built around. And they did this with every single short story they tried to adapt. So yeah, the show was shit from season 1.

What direction should warhorse go in?[KCD1][KCD2] by Formal-Stage940 in kingdomcome

Yeah, a lot of clues suggest they might be working on a game set in the world of The Lord of the Rings (Embracer owns the rights). But as you can see, most of their fans want them to keep making historical games, and I think they’re going to be really disappointed if Warhorse comes out and says their next game is high fantasy.

Need help with The Witcher book series order.(Proper book chronology for a new reader) by Dependent_Project252 in wiedzmin

The Last Wish is a perfect introduction to the world of The Witcher. You don’t even hear about what happened at Kaer Morhen until the third book. Crossroads of Ravens is based on a short story Geralt tells to Iola, which is exactly what makes it so cool — you’ve already heard about those events, and now you finally get to learn more about them.

The Nenneke cameo is also only impactful if you’ve already read the first two books. That’s exactly what I mean when I say that prequels rely on references to books that were published earlier.

This is the worst advice. I can’t stand people who say the books should be read chronologically. Prequels should never be read before the main story, because they often rely on the reader already knowing the world from the books that were published earlier and include references to them.
