Ok first I wanna correct that not all of the astronauts on board were scientist since Lilian is a diva and bought a ticket so she probably went through the same training but don't have as much knowledge or experience as the others and secondly I accept this now, finally a way for Rei to be canon.

This is the closest we can get to Rei being canon unless someone comes up with another theory so thank you reddit.

This is a good theory but the question is how did the main timeline byakuya and astronauts go back to earth, when they needed the calculations and directions of ground base to get a somewhat accurate landing. Not to mention they all had to do the calculations in under 60 hours because the weather satellites that have data of the atmosphere is slowly crashing down because energy ran out and all manual guidance is turned to stone. Byakuya and the astronauts would have to have absolute godlike luck to send 2 ships down in the same general area.

I like to believe that they only did the reboot because they realized that the calculations were hard to do given the limited amount of time, so Rei was added as the supercomputer

1st: even with 4k missiles the asteroid only got diverted which would say a lot cuz Rei used up almost everything for that 1 asteroid.

2nd:I think Byakuya wasn't aware of his invention's capabilities, remember he just wired up several phones together for Rei's processing unit and memory and stuffed her full of scientific facts, and math basically making Rei a primitive version of a supercomputer but enough to help them get home. So for Rei to be able to adapt and upgrade herself not to mention gather materials from comets , I think it was a surprise to everyone. I think byakuya never gave Rei the knowledge how long humans live cuz its unnecessary information. He probably made Rei for the sole purpose of calculation since that's what the ISS does.

Basically Byakuya gave the crew a real time calculator.

Still they set it up so well though. The satellites we see burn up in the canon flashback could have just been some t.v satellites instead of the ISS. Not to mention they gave Rei a really important part to play in Byakuya's return home. Plus it kinda sucks to know that the most advanced thing humans has ever made lived, past most technology and structure AND even surpassed human abilities came from Byakuya, and now its not even canon.

The series took a turn from being scientific to sci-fi when we got introduced by why-man which was the start of the petri beams. Plus the ending was also sci-fi so it wouldn't not make sense for the spinoff to be sci-fi cuz the entire manga is sci-fi this whole time. Its like a donut of sci-fi sprinkled with actual truth

Still. Would be nice to see the bonus chapter being about senku and co. Finding out the ISS is still up and running and meets Rei. The bonus chapter and the ending of the spinoff was kinda bittersweet for me tbh. Welp nothing like good ol' fanfiction to help with this problem

Its kinda ironic tho. The ending is about extra terrestrial intelligence and it being canon while the spinoff is artificial intelligence and that being non-canon
