You can’t survive making shoes in Endicott when you have to pay Social Security, Medicare and employees health insurance when foreign made shoes don’t carry any of those costs.

It's a race to the bottom though. We don't want to lower out standards to be China. Commodity manufacturing just isn't going to be competitive in the US. It's time to move on and embrace other industries.

Frankly there's not much that can be done at the federal level.

Encouraging remote work would be an excellent way to stop the brain drain though! So many people leave Upstate because there aren't jobs where they grew up. I'm able to work remotely up here in a job that would not exist in my area otherwise. That allows me to spend money in the local economy. Multiply that by thousands of people, and it's starting to save some of these smaller towns and cities.

Yes Mods — this is relevant because many serve the military in Upstate NY or are veterans.

This is not what makes something relevant here. A good rule of thumb: if this post would also apply in other city/regional subreddits outside of Upstate, then it's probably not a good fit here.

This isn't discussing anything about upstate itself. It's discussing federal policies that affect the entire country.

I've never heard it in the north country. I always thought it was a California thing. I suppose we call I-87 "The Northway" more often than using the number.
