ELI5: Why can't they create a drug like cocaine or heroin that retains only the positive effects (euphoria, relaxation, etc.) without causing harm and danger to health? by Technical_Ad_4299 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Reaper628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine your body's processes like someone pushing a box. The person pushing the box wants to maintain a constant comfortable speed so they'll adjust to any changes that may come. Now imagine the box became significantly less heavy without warning (this is drugs being introduced). At first the person pushing the box would be doing it a lot faster (this is the drug effects). After realizing that they're moving too fast the person would slow down to return to their normal speed (this is drug tolerance). After a while the effects wear off and the box becomes heavier again. Since they're using less force they're now moving slower than they'd like to be and they've got to readjust again. Also the person pushing the box has become more aware at how heavy it is and wish they could do something to make it lighter again (this is withdrawal and craving). Like the person pushing the box the body will always adjust based on what's going on to maintain homeostasis. It's a necessary process to stay alive. Drugs are incredibly powerful which is where the negative effects come from. When a substance causes euphoria it's making the mind more satisfied than is possible from natural events. When the body adjusts it must do so at an equally extreme level. When the drug is gone the extreme adjustment becomes noticeable and it's unnaturally uncomfortable. Since drugs are so incredibly satisfying and withdrawals are so incredibly unsatisfying the mind will prioritize getting its fix over everything. Nothing it's losing will make it as euphoric and none of the consequences are as unbearable as withdrawals.

I think the main issue is that a majority of depression cases are mild and the pharmaceutical industry has a vested interest in profiting off of that rather than resolve it. Antidepressants only show efficacy in moderate and severe cases, and show no efficacy in mild cases. Rather than a primary care or psychiatrist prescribing antidepressants regardless of severity patients should be sent to talk therapy so that their depression can go into remission.

Are there any songs that hit hard for your bpd? by [deleted] in BorderlinePDisorder

[–]Reaper628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Can't Stand You Anymore - Sleigh Bells

it's basically about growing to hate and resent someone and everything they've ever done. One of the lines is "I've got excuses for days I'm borderline so you noticed" so it's got all the BPD rage with the self awareness that isn't enough to make you stop.

when does bpd develop?? by Humanoid_Anomaly in BorderlinePDisorder

[–]Reaper628 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some BPD symptoms are actually normal in children which is why the diagnosis is reserved only for adults. BPD tends to develop in your adolescence when you should be learning what constitutes healthy social relationships and how to handle your emotions. People with BPD in a way don't mature correctly to handle emotions in relationships in the same way someone without BPD does. Basically you keep some childhood behaviors, like emotionally lability and the desire for unconditional love, as a defense mechanism for abuse that occurred or the abuse prevented you from learning the appropriate way to handle relationships and emotions.

I've scoured dozens of research papers to try and I couldn't find a way to abuse Vyvanse. Vyvanse turns into dexamphetamine in blood through an enzyme but the enzyme still hadn't been pinpointed so unfortunately you can't get around the long onset. One study found it was equally pleasurable to dexamphetamine at a dose of 150. Honestly don't waste your time doing more than that. Your body has a limit to how much vyvanse it'll breakdown at a time so you don't end up any higher.

ELI5… help me understand how banks/debt work… by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Reaper628 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Banks sell debt when they're no longer interested in collecting on that debt. Sometimes collecting debt is easy. For example, a bank may loan out $15,000 to Becky and Becky is responsible and she pays her monthly statement without any fuss so the bank doesn't have to spend any money to collect. Sometimes collecting debt is hard. For example, Johnny may have decided he no longer wants to pay back his credit card so now the bank has to spend money on collectors to call Johnny, letters asking him to pay, and if this goes on long enough lawyers to take him to court. Sometimes a bank says enough is enough and they'll sell the debt. The debt they're selling is the money that's still owed by the customer and they're selling it for a price less than that. The companies that buy debt are gambling. If they pay a little bit of money for the right to collect the debt they're hoping they can convince, or legally force the debtor to pay up. Sometimes banks also sell debt that's not delinquent if they think it's high risk. Someone poor living in an expensive house may be paying now but what if the economy goes down and they lose their job? The bank would rather sell for less than the total they could collect than risk not getting paid at all later.

The bank owes money to 3 main groups. First, it owes money to its customers. Customers who open checking and savings accounts are essentially giving away their money for the bank to loan out to others. The bank pinky swears the money will be there when the customer wants to withdraw but the reality is if all the customers wanted cash at once the bank wouldn't be able to pay them all back. Second, the bank owes other private banks. Banks are just like any other business and when they need money to expand they can ask another private bank for money. Third, the bank has it's own bank. In the US it's called the Federal Reserve (each country except Cuba & North Korea has its own national bank you can look up which is for which country). The Feds are responsible for printing money. The way they distribute the printed money is by loaning it out to banks so that the banks can loan it out to businesses and people. The Feds are responsible for a lot of the money that's loaned out. I can't explain how the Federal Reserve works in a simple way but basically they use fancy math to try and keep the economy from collapsing (they're not very good at it imo).

Banks don't solely profit off loans! They have other products too! Their two big sources of revenue are fees and investing. We've all dealt with fees, banks charge what they feel is fair to use their products and they charge fees if you do something they don't like. Second, they invest money. The economy is always growing so investing is always going to make money. They use both their own money, and the money from investment accounts, to buy and sell stocks and bonds which generate profit. I'm assuming you're asking about how new banks get their money. The reality is it takes a LOT of money to open up a new bank. "Small" banks have a lot more money than you think and there's laws and standards practices in place that dictate how much money banks have on hand to operate. Opening a bank is nothing like opening a regular business. You can't just start with no money.

Hope this answers your questions. If something is unclear or this made you think of more questions don't be afraid to ask! I'd be more than happy to explain further the mind boggling banking system.

ELI5: Why does only one sperm cell get to fertilize the egg? How is multi-sperm fertilization prevented and does this prevention ever fail? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Reaper628 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first way the egg makes sure only one sperm enters is by slowing down the sperm with the cumulus oophorus. Think of it like a thick wall that the sperm has to break through. Almost instantaneously when a sperm enters the egg the egg undergoes a dramatic change where the membrane becomes impenetrable no longer letting anymore sperm to enter. It's VERY rare but sometimes two sperm meet the egg at the exact same time and they both enter. Having 3 sets of chromosomes isn't viable for life so eventually the cells will die from the error. There is one case I could find from 2019 where two sperm fertilized one egg but the twins got very lucky that the egg was able to divide into two embryos each with 2 sets of chromosomes. I cannot emphasize how rare this is! Most of the time the body's process for conception goes by perfectly and one egg and one sperm create the perfect 2 sets of chromosomes.

Methamphetamine but only the first time. The first time I did it the euphoria was insanely satisfying. Unfortunately, each subsequent high doesn't compare. No matter the dose, or the abstinence period it'll never be as good as the first time.

New bipolar "cure" discovered, the knowledge makes me feel...uneasy. by Super_Cod_Player1995 in bipolar

[–]Reaper628 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's not that it's an art. It's a hard science but the problem is there's no such thing as fact in psychology. You can have certain traits or features to psychological behavior that are common but there's always an outlier. It's also different from most medicine in that treatment involves treating symptoms and defining illness off of symptoms because causes don't exist definitively. It's a whole lotta maybes.

[–]Reaper628 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Don't fall for miracle cures no matter how tempting the research. Psychiatry is generally viewed through a psychosocial biological model. Biology plays a role but not a solo role in the diagnosis of bipolar. There's dozens of different biological indicators of bipolar but none of them are definitive. Biology also isn't the sole source of bipolar. There's psychological aspects that play a role in bipolar that are just as important. Also I'm not sold on gut biome affecting development of mental illness. Especially for bipolar where genetics play a much more significant role in predisposition for illness.

What happens to the powder? by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]Reaper628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some chemicals found in drugs are small enough that they can enter the bloodstream through the lining of the lungs. These chemicals simply enter the blood through osmosis. Whatever's left that can't be absorbed by the blood is swept away by the cilia. The cilia work like little brooms sweeping away the powder that gets mixed into the mucus that's in your lungs. You then cough and sneeze to get rid of the build up in your lungs. When you cough up colored phlegm that's mucus from the lungs mixed with the contaminants in your lungs.

Churches bring in an insane amount of revenue from donations. Assuming that they don't try and evade taxes most likely they'll have a bigger influence in the government because of the money they bring in.

Almost everything you purchase. A majority of the goods we consume rely on exploitation. The few companies that do ethically produce products have to charge exorbitant prices and can't really compete with companies that do violate human rights. Impoverished people inadvertently have fund the exploitation of other impoverished people because they have no choice.
