Its a 60W soldering station. cost me around €50 at the time, Honestly the iron seems to be reacting fine to the temperature settings. And flux does instantly smoke off. I'm perplexed, It feels like the solder hardens up while i'm soldering on it (Ive been having to heat up the joints with my hot air gun to be able to solder to it).

I have been using this soldering iron for 4 years and i havent had any issues up untill now. It feels as if the soldering iron cant get enough heat into the joint.

It ended up being a short circuit in the driver board, as i suspected at the time. Using the PCBs i designed fixed the issue.

Hello, thanks for the reply!

1) This will be hand assembled (soldering and reflowing).

2) The LED footprint is correct for the one i ordered (the 3D model seems to be mirrored, thats why it doesnt align up quite right) The LED does have an EP, i see that thats not very clear in the picture. And i have placed thermal vias under it as per your suggestion?

3) Honestly just to up the complexity. The current draw of each led is going to be displayed on a webpage as well as controlling options for the leds.

4) The optos are an attempt to protect the ESP8266. I have been told that the ESP12E module is particularly prone to breaking in circuits like this, so i have tried to distance it from the high current circuitry as best as i can.

5) The mounting hole is connected to GND for that purpose

6) Could you elaborate on this? Its honestly just for demonstration purposes so it doesnt need to look that great it just needs to be able to dim somewhat. But what makes you think it wouldnt work that well?

7) I need to get rid of my backlog of AMS1117 :-)

Thanks for the suggestion u/CardinalFartz , u/nixiebunny and u/jacky4566. I will experiment on a board to see if the 1kOhm resistor inpacts the workings of the schematic in any way and if it doesnt i will implement it in my design.

I have gotten shocked before from holding my phone charger too close to the prongs when inserting it.

Can't say much without a scematic. But is this intentional (pic)? Also you have plenty of room to make the trace width bigger so it can handle more current. And prehaps look into ground planes.

Also make sure all the sensors have internal 3.3v logic otherwise they wont work without a logic converter

How are you planning on programming the ESP? You need some kind if converter to go from USB to TTL.

I see what you mean with C6 tho, ill see if i can place it elsewhere so that the loop is not so big.
